New Presiding Bishop-elect
Bishop Michael Curry
Presiding Bishop-elect Michael Curry makes a point at his first news conference a few hours after his historic election at the 27th presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church. Photo: Janet Kawamoto/For Episcopal News Service |
[Episcopal News Service - Salt Lake City] Several hours after being elected as the Episcopal Church's 27th - and first African-American - presiding bishop-elect, Michael Curry fielded a range of media questions with characteristic humility and humor June 27 and said he intends to build on the good work of his predecessor "because that's the way the Spirit works."
Current Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori introduced Curry at a crowded press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake City, saying the House of Bishops handed him "a major mandate" with the historic landslide victory.

Celebrate Our Armed Forces Give thanks for those who serve
Continue this weekend's festivities with a celebration of our armed forces at the 10 o'clock service this Sunday, July 5. Plan to attend as we honor those, past and present, who serve our country. A special brass quartet will be joining us in worship as well as CDR David Thames, Command Chaplain, USS Carl Vinson who will be our guest speaker. Parishioners are encouraged to don their best red, white, and blue; military personnel may wear their dress uniform. Former military members should either wear their uniforms or if in civilian clothing, wear their miniature medals.

Bloodmobile this Sunday, July 5.
|
Yes, the 4th of July is the day we celebrate our nation's independence, and on the 5th we'll celebrate the members of our armed forces and the sacrifices that come with their service. We've selected this very important weekend to host the San Diego Blood Bank's Bloodmobile to help those who are often fighting for their very own lives. Your donation this Sunday can literally save a life. Won't you take a moment from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and stop by to give the gift of life. You may register online now or just walk-in that day.

Campfire Christ Church Someone say "s'mores"?

Campfire in the courtyard, July 9th
| So many wonderful memories are made around campfires. It is a chance to roast marshmallows, sing songs, visit with friends and just relax. On Thursday, July 9th at 7:00 p.m., Christ Church will have a campfire in our courtyard. Please bring your camp chair, friends and beverage of choice. Christ Church will provide the fixings for s'mores, the fire and of course the fun. Oh, and if you play a guitar or a ukulele, feel free to bring it with you! |
Rahill Funeral July 11 - 1:00 p.m. The funeral service for our dear friend Marjorie Rahill will be Saturday, July 11 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception following in the parish hall. Her kind words, caring way, and pastoral care and concern will be sorely missed. Donations may be made to Christ Church in Marjorie's name. |
Church Al Fresco Sunday, July 12 - 10:00 a.m.
Now that summer is here, it's time to enjoy our beautiful weather and surroundings and worship together outdoors. The Blue Grass Band will provide music for the service, and everyone is encouraged to "come casual"- wear your jeans, shorts, flip flops, whatever you're comfortable in. There will be folding chairs but you can bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the "lawn." Consider bringing a neighbor or friend. |

Annual Backpack Drive Begins next Sunday, July 12 We'll begin our fifth annual backpack drive for low-income and homeless kids on Sunday, July 12. While it may seem too early to start on this project with summer having just began, the major retailers have already started their back-to-school specials. Last year we helped over 150 children get the school year off to a great start. The need is especially great this year as we are hoping to support two diocesan Back 2 School Bash sites - St Mark's and St John's Fallbrook, as well as providing packs for homeless kids in the Vista Unified School District through North County Lifeline. As you shop for back-to-school supplies for your own children or grandchildren, pick up an extra set to help these less fortunate students. Visit the table in the courtyard for a list of the supplies needed. If you would prefer, you may donate $35 for a kindergarten through grade five child or $45 for a 6-12 grade child; and service ministry members will shop for you. There will be a table in the courtyard every Sunday beginning July 12 for six weeks where you may pick up a supplies list or make a donation. We'll decorate the church with backpacks and bless them on August 16. |
Weekly Food Donation
Help with non-perishable food Any and all donations to the St. Mark's Neighborhood Food Pantry are appreciated; your contributions each week are very important to help insure the pantry is well-stocked. St. Mark's has seen visitor numbers steadily increase in the last year. Our items are delivered to St. Mark's each Wednesday...so contribute if you can: - July 5 - pasta & sauce
- July 12 - rice
- July 19 - canned protein (tuna or chicken)
- July 26 - canned vegetables
