Happy Holidays!
Tis the season...to be jolly, share kindness and peace with others, enjoy great food and even better company... and, of course, gifts. I remember back to a time when my kids were small, and Christmas morning was filled with so much excitement. Of course, Christmas Eve was sometimes quite stressful, largely due to that tiny little phrase that seemed to be on every box...some assembly required. The box held promise, but all the little pieces and parts were daunting and overwhelming. If you've built a hundred bikes, you can nail it, but if you've never built a bike, good instructions and sound advice are invaluable. When it comes to estate planning, it's my privilege to help my clients makes sense of all of the pieces and parts and make informed decisions that create a cohesive plan. It may not be a shiny new red bike, but the sense of peace is a really great gift.

With 2015 Right Around the Corner, It's Time to Start Thinking About Your New Year's Resolutions
It doesn't matter whether you have an estate plan or you don't, one important item to add to your list is getting an estate plan checkup.
Don't Have an Estate Plan?
If you don't already have an estate plan, then getting one in place should be at the top of your 2015 new year's resolutions.
Why? Because without an estate plan, you and your property may end up in a court-supervised guardianship if you become incapacitated, and your property and your loved ones may end up in probate court after you die.
Worse yet, if you don't take the time to make your own will, then the state where you live at the time of your death will essentially write one for you, and it most likely won't divvy up your property the way you would have.

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Orders
A recent letter to the Editor in the Columbus Dispatch has spurred many of my clients to ask about Do Not Resuscitate Orders (DNR).
Many people have Health Care Powers of Attorney to appoint an agent to make health care decisions for them or a living will to express that they do not want to remain on life support. A DNR is a third type of document which is a medical order that only a physician or other authorized person may write. It is generally a document that someone in a terminal condition will consider. What does DNR mean? Under Ohio law there are two types of DNR orders. These standardized DNR orders allow patients to choose the extent of the treatment they wish to receive at the end of life.
