Making Plans

November/2013
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for the day,
and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is a wonderful time to get together with family and friends and enjoy each other's company in a simple manner. I have fond memories of family discussions around the table on Thanksgiving Day. There is a lot each generation can learn from other generations and I hope that my children will treasure this time, as I do, and pass their own great memories on to generations to come.

I am thankful for each of you, my valued clients, friends, and associates. This Thanksgiving I hope that you can all take some time to reflect on what you are thankful for and are able to spend some time with those people that are important to you.

Why Funding Your Trust is so Important

When a person dies, there are only four ways assets are transferred to someone else:

1 -- Joint with Right of Survivorship (Operation of Law)

2 -- Beneficiary Designation (Third Party Contract)

3 -- Individual Ownership

4 -- Trust

Let's review what each of these are and explain why funding your trust is so important.

Deed Copy Scam

Several of my clients have contacted me about a letter that they have received offering to provide them with copies of their deed.  The company will ask property owners for money (usually $86.00) to receive a copy of their property deed. In most counties in Ohio you can obtain a copy of your deed for free from the internet or for a small fee directly from the Recorder's Office ($2.00) per page.

If you have any questions about a letter received or getting a copy of a deed, please contact my office.

Changes to Homestead Exemption in 2014

Ohio's Homestead Exemption is a statewide program that allows qualifying homeowners to shelter a portion of the market value of their homes from property taxes.

Since 2007, all Ohio homeowners age 65 or older and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans have been eligible for the Homestead Exemption, regardless of their income, allowing them to exempt $25,000 of their property value from property taxes worth an average credit of approximately $400 on their property tax bill.
