An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Isn't that the promise?
April 7, 2013 is World Health Day, a day to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 by highlighting a priority area of public health concern. WHO declared that the well-being of societies is directly linked to the health and survival of mothers and children. Domestic violence is a health issue, and A Woman's Place (AWP) joins heath care in caring about domestic violence.
On September 12, 2012, 2,308 victims of domestic violence sought help in Pennsylvania. 2,308 in one day. Another 933 requests for services had to be denied because of insufficient resources. This data was collected as part of the seventh annual census, conducted in all 50 states by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Domestic violence is a health issue. AWP knows it is a health issue. The world knows it is a health issue. On September 12, over 3,200 victims of domestic violence in Pennsylvania presented with a health care issue and sought assistance. That's a lot of apples.
What can we do? Be there to respond! Support the provision of domestic violence programs and services. Be honest with your medical professionals about your health care needs and the issues that may be their root cause. Be there for your friends and family members who are victims of violence and dealing with the negative health impacts as a result of that violence. Join AWP and health care in caring about domestic violence. Our world health depends on it.
Health cares about domestic violence - and you can also!
