Today, January 21, 2013, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of peace and equality for all human beings. Living during an era in our country's history when many "Strange Fruit" hung from Southern trees, Dr. King believed only non-violent interactions with his oppressors were an authentic way to advocate against the injustices that plagued American Blacks. His Six Principles of Non Violence are relevant in how the staff and volunteers of A Woman's Place (AWP) assist in cultivating a beloved community.
One of the Six Principles
states that "The Beloved
Community is the framework for the future." Its fundamental message is that we are inherently responsible for the well-being and treatment of all human beings. We as a community must assist and uplift the oppressed when we are aware of oppression. We don't have the privilege to believe it is someone else's problem.
Volunteering at AWP offers the opportunity to help build Dr. King's beloved community. You are invited to work side by side with and for those who are oppressed so that one day we can all flourish. This can only be achieved with the support of your talents, time, and commitment to end domestic violence.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to injustice everywhere."
--"Letter from Birmingham Jail, " April 16, 1963
