'Tis the season of cakes and cookies...and thinking about improving our health. Perhaps a lifestyle change, improving diet or exercise; these are often our first thoughts. As it turns out, volunteering may be just what the doctor ordered.

In 2010, a survey released by UnitedHealthcare found that 68 percent of those who volunteered in the past year report that it has made them feel physically healthier. The study also linked volunteering to healthier Body Mass Index (BMI) and better management of chronic diseases. Let's not forget that volunteerism makes people happier. According to Dr. Mark Leenay, UnitedHealthcare senior vice president, "Volunteering is an activity we all can do, not only to serve our neighbors and communities, but also to improve our own well-being".

At A Woman's Place (AWP) there are many volunteer opportunities:

For more information on these and other volunteer opportunites at AWP, please contact Lisa Armstrong at 215.343.9241 x124 or larmstrong@awomansplace.org.

As the New Year approaches, incorporate volunteerism into your life. It may be just what that doctor ordered and could lead you to a happier, healthier year ahead.
