Happy 83rd Birthday, Mom

Mom turned 83 this week on September 7 so I thought I would take the time to wish her a very happy birthday.  Many of you know my mother, Sonja Behnke Festerling as she worked at our garden center for most of her life. Retired now, she lives with her husband in Western Howard County so she does not make it to Beltsville as often as she would like. Mom is one of the past presidents of Behnke's, and before that handled the advertising along with her love of propagating African Violets. But before she came back to work at Behnke's in the 60's, she was a model and actress! She then taught modeling in Washington, DC. I have been trying my best to get her to tell me more of her experiences during those times so I can share them with my grandchildren but with a twinkle in her eyes she will just smile and say some things are best kept to yourself. Hmmm... then I found out that her former New York roommate, Florence Henderson, wrote about Mom in her book, Life Is Not A Stage... While she got the spelling of Behnke and Sonja wrong in the book it showed another side of my mom that I never really knew about. No wonder there was a twinkle in her eye. 
This photo of Mom is one I love. Taken while on a trip to Alaska you see her beautiful smile that is just as bright today as it was when she was a little girl growing up at Behnke's.
