Helmut's Garden Party
Helmut Jaehnigen, Behnke's former tree and shrub buyer/manager, was a big part of my life growing up at the nursery. Each summer he and his wife, Linda, have a garden party at his own "Little Arboretum." They invite present and former Behnke employees to stop by to see his beautiful gardens and enjoy some great food. But best of all, it is a time to share stories and see old friends we have not seen for awhile. Of course I brought my mother, Sonja Behnke Festerling; it was so much fun for these two old friends to be able to see each other again.
 Helmut and Linda's gardens are a sight to behold. To walk around his yard in this
quiet Columbia neighborhood is almost like being taken back in time. You realize that you see no other houses or hear the hustle and bustle of cars rushing here and there. You're in a place that is just peaceful. With small greenhouses for starting plants, a few garden ponds, and so many specimen plants and trees (most bought at Behnke's of course) you could spend hours just being amazed.
Before the day was over, out came Helmut's old photo album, kindling even more laughter and memories. I took a few pictures of his pictures and have posted them on our flickr site if you want to check them out. Who knows, maybe you will see yourself in one of them. Enjoy!
