Behnke's Welcomes the IGC East Tour.....
Last year we were approached by the IGC (Independent Garden Centers) trade show organizers, to see if Behnke Nurseries would be part of their tour of local garden centers during their annual East Coast show. On the first day of this four day event, independent garden center employees could take a tour of local gardens and garden centers, and then spend three days at some wonderful classes and key note lectures (I got to hear Martha Stewart yesterday talk about her love of gardening). There is also a large vendor show for ideas and shopping (I found some great new fairy garden things I can't wait to share with everyone).Anyway, back to the tour... Though having events during the year gives us incentive to fix and clean, everyone gave 110% to making our garden center look great for the tour. Alfred, our president, said: "Let's do some major spit and polish." Over 100 folks visited Behnke's this past Monday and because we were the last stop on the tour, we hosted an end-of-the-day reception. Our friends at ESPOMA decided to sponsor the event to showcase their new line of fertilizers, and what started as some chips and water ended up being a cook out party! Larry Pendelton from Old Line Fine Wine, Spirits, and Bistro in Beltsville, MD arranged with Jailbreak Brewing Company of Laurel, MD and Romano Vineyard & Winery of Brandywine, MD to provide beer and wine. Can you tell we love supporting local businesses?
When we heard Jailbreak was attending, I remembered an old, old jail cell door from the Woodbine, MD jail that my husband bought at an auction. Our talented graphic department, took the door and made a stage for everyone to have their photos taken and, as you can see, our ESPOMA sales rep, Shawn, really got into the spirit of things.
As the buses left, we all came out to wave good-by and someone was quick enough to suggest a Behnke group photo. I only wish everyone could have been in the picture!

Vacationing (& Gardening) 'Tis the season when we all wish we were kicking back in a tropical paradise. Our wandering horticulturist, Larry Hurley, has spent much of the summer on the tropical island of Montserrat, but he's not kicking back; he's gardening (and defending his plants from wandering sheep)!
