It's A Plane... It's A Bird....
Last October during our Chili Cook-Off, many folks saw a little something buzzing around overhead. We all laughed and waved and came to find out our good friend Dewey DeVane from Maryland Aerial Videos had his drone flying around creating this amazing video of our garden center. We have been here 85 years and, well, it kinda looks like it. From the rusty roofs to the shade area, we are showing our age from above. But under all that you still have acres and acres you can wander around and find whatever you came for. Even if it was just to relax among all the beautiful plants.
When I look at this aerial video, I see the parking lot where two ponds used to be and remember fishing in them and the ducks and swans that swam in them. I see my childhood brick house where, after we moved, many of our employees have lived and raised their families. I see the back parking lot and the cinder block building next to it and remember when the parking lot was all woods and the building was a deli. I see Wicomico Ave and I remember sleigh rides down what seemed like the biggest, darn hill ever with a big, old fire at the top of the hill. I see that old, dirt road that runs behind the nursery and recall all the fun we had building forts back along the side of the road.
Growing up in Beltsville in the 60's we were all so blessed with such a simple life. The families that lived on, and still live on, Wicomico Ave all watched out for us kids. Everyone knew everyone. And believe me, no-one could get away with much of anything on our road. Most days, we all ended up at the old playground at the nursery or in the tree forts out back.
It's amazing how just watching something like this can bring back so many memories. Life is all about change and growing and boy have we changed and grown. Thank you everyone for being part of Behnke's one way or another!
