FREE Paper Shredding This Saturday
I don't know about you, but I certainty have a lot of unnecessary paper. I made myself a goal to de-clutter my house and have been working on it for about a year. This spring I tackled our basement. OK, we had a small flood during the Spring rains so I had no choice. But as I looked at the shelves my husband put up for me years ago, I knew I had a problem.
In 1979, I got married and my husband and I started our wholesale nursery together. It's been about 8 years now since we closed our business and I came back to work at Behnke's. At first I thought I might need to get hold of some record or document, so I left the boxes (and boxes) of files alone. Then, I had more excuses: my daughter's wedding, the birth of a grandchild, my work here. Always, something was more important. That all ended with the "small" flood (thank goodness for wet/dry vacs). Once I started tossing papers, I kept going. Bag after bag, gone. I am pleased to say I am now up to 1989. While going through each file, I noticed right away that I could not put everything in the trash. With sensitive information like employee records and credit card numbers, there were just some things that needed to be shredded. Needless to say, there was no way I was ever going to finish this job shredding on my own. Thank goodness the idea of holding a paper shredding day here at Behnke's came up. In the past, July was when we held a Community Yard Sale to benefit The Beltsville Lions Club. But this year it just was not going to work out. We did not want to let our friends, the Lions, down, so we came up with the idea of a FREE Community Paper Shredding Day. When Revere Bank in Laurel heard about it, they offered to sponsor the whole event. We have never done anything like this before, so hopefully everyone has a good time and comes out to support the Beltsville Lions Club. It's a great way to safely shred those documents that you have been wanting to get rid of. The Lions Club will have refreshments, a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for various gift cards. We will start shredding at 8am this Saturday, July 25 in the main parking lot and go until 12noon. This is a sheet-paper-only shredding event, so please do not bring electronics or any large, heavy-duty books, notebooks, boxes, etc. to be shredded.
See you in the parking lot! - Stephanie Fleming, Behnke Nurseries
