Blueberry Pickin' Time
Aaron blueberries One of the best times of the year is when the blueberries are ready to pick. When I was a little girl, my grandfather had many different kinds of blueberry bushes, of course, and he spent a lot of time making sure they were covered with netting to protect the berries from the birds. When we walked in, it was almost like entering a big cage. We would pick them and then came the fun: my grandmother's German Blueberry pancakes. Super thin pancakes made with the blueberries, piled up in a tall stack, layered with butter (real) and sugar (again real), and then cut into pie slices. While I made her write down the recipe, I have never been able to make them quite like she did. Maybe it was that bit of love she tossed in.

As the years passed and I got married and moved next door to my in-laws, I found the fun of picking their blueberries off the oldest, largest bush I have ever seen. Over 50 years old, it produces the sweetest tiny blueberries ever. No netting needed as there are always more than enough to share with the birds. My children grew up picking the berries each evening with their grandparents, filling basket after basket. My mother-in-law, Jane, would make yummy desserts and freeze jars full so we could enjoy them all year long.

Last night when my little grandson Aaron was over, he saw my little blueberry bush and got a big old smile and asked if he could have the one ripe one on the bush. Sure you can, but let's go see if Great Grandma has any on her blueberry bush! Off he ran to get her, and down they went to check it out. Hands reaching out picking beautiful ripe berries with nowhere to place them except his mouth. At this point we decided his Orioles baseball hat would do for a basket, and darn if he did not help pick them all.

You know, sometimes it is just the simplest of things that makes life wonderful: seeing the two of them enjoying this family tradition and watching my daughter watch from the back yard with a big grin on her face, happy that her little guy got to do another thing that she and her brother grew up doing.
