Fairy Gardening
Last weekend, I had a chat with a customer who was so excited about all the new items we have in our Fairy Gardening section. She told me about her love for doll houses and how now, in her 40's, that love has extended to Fairy Gardens. It sure sounded like she has a wonderful woodland garden and, if you were to look carefully, you would find all the things a little fairy or gnome might want. I just hope she sends me some photos.
Last month, while in Atlanta, shopping for the 2015 season (am I lucky or what?) at AmericasMart, I happened upon two new suppliers of everything miniature. I hope you get the chance to stop by and see all the new little fairies, gnomes and tiny animals we have added. My personal favorites are the little dragons, and the gnome riding a turtle. although, I have to say the little fairy on the swing might be going into my own fairy garden.
This weekend, Carol Allen will be doing a FREE talk on Terrariums: "Growing Your Own Miniature Garden Under Glass." After the class, there will be a potting party. Bring your own glass or clear plastic container (example: cookie jar, large pretzel container, aquarium), or buy a glass container from us. Then, for the cost of the plants and materials, you can build your own terrarium. Pick out one of the new little fairies or even a little house and you will be done!

Potomac Rose Society ~ John Smith speaks on Rose Hybridization on Sunday, February 15 at 2PM
Have you ever wondered just exactly how the new roses that appear every year are produced? Everyone knows that the process is called hybridization, but what exactly does that involve for roses? The PRS is very fortunate to have as a member John Smith of Westminster, MD who is without doubt the foremost private hybridizer in America today. John developed the rose 'Randy Scott' that was selected to grace the cover of the American Rose Society's "Handbook for Selecting Roses," 2015 edition. 'Randy Scott' is a beautiful white rose that has rapidly become one of the top show roses in the entire country. At our February 15th meeting at Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville, John will give a presentation on how hybridization is done and will tell us about some of his other beautiful, award winning roses, including 'Snuffy,' an orange pink; 'Dina Gee,' a red blend; 'Sunny Sundays,' a yellow blend and others. Don't miss this opportunity to meet and learn from one of the most prominent rosarians and hybridizers in the entire country.
You can get a preview of some of John's roses at his website, silverrunroses.com. Everyone is invited to join us for what will be a fascinating meeting that is free to everyone!
