Orchids have always been a big part of Behnke Nurseries. As far back as I can remember, my grandmother, Rose Behnke had her orchids. She had a wonderful room off of their home in Burtonsville we all called the sun room (see photo, above). It was the one room we all loved to be in. My grandfather would read his morning paper while my grandmother watered and cleaned the many plants in this room. Some of the prettiest were her orchids. We all laugh now how about how, when some came into bloom at Behnke's, she would snatch them up and take them home with her.  

Four years ago we were lucky enough to host both the National Capital Orchid Society's Paph Forum (all about Ladyslipper Orchids) and their Orchid Auction. This year only the Orchid Auction will be at Behnke's, but I have to say there is something about an auction where my hand just goes up and I end up with orchids.  They will be back this Sunday, February 8th and if you have never been to this event, be sure to make plans to attend.
