Daylight Savings Time... Already?
~ Stephanie Fleming
Clock It's hard to believe that this upcoming Sunday, November 2, marks the end of Daylight Saving Time for most of the United States. Hey wait! That means some places like Arizona do not observe it.  Really? I am not sure just how that works out, but it sounds good to me. Here is a link to the why's and how's of it if you're interested.
I know everyone is happy they get an extra hour of sleep in the morning, but not me. I have never minded getting up early but that long dark drive home is awful. Most of the year, I love seeing the changes of the seasons on my hour long drive to and from Behnke's. Starting early in the year, I watch for those first signs of Spring in everyone's yards. I always love seeing those early Forsythia blooming the closer I get to Beltsville. Then it seems all at once everything is full of color and we head into Summer with the lush green shade trees and all the beautiful annuals. Now we are seeing the beautiful Fall leaves which is, of course, another one of my favorite seasons. And now we are getting closer to WINTER... sigh...I know there is beauty in our landscapes in Winter; however, as I mentioned above, it is so darned dark I cannot enjoy it! Finding something positive about the changing of our clocks is not that hard though...It means we are closer to Thanksgiving--which anyone who knows me, knows I love.  So I will take a deep breath, and try to enjoy the dark drives home knowing that before we know, it will be Spring again--even if I keep hearing "Winter is Coming" in recorded book versions of George R.R. Martin's  The Game Of Thrones series on the long, dark drive.

Introduction to Spring Blooming Bulbs
By Jim Dronenburg

Flowering bulbs are among the most reliable plants in the garden. Properly handled, they will reward the gardener with dazzling displays - often the first breath of spring.

But first, a map of your yard is a Good Thing. Almost nothing is so irritating as forgetting where they are and seeing half of a good, large bulb coming up with your shovelful of soil. Unless you are planting for a good show this spring, I'd advise you to plant the bulbs more sparsely than the planting directions tell you - treat them right and they will fill in. They don't ask much - any bulb or vegetable food (low nitrogen, high phosphorus/potash) will do. I generally dig it in when I'm planting. Bone meal is good, too (if you are not planting around things that need an acid soil), as it releases nutrients for years, and so slowly that it cannot burn the plants.

'Heating it up with Homemade Hotsauce'
~ Jessica Crawford, Behnke's Garden Blogger

Spicy Hot Peppers J. Crawford I love spicy food. Not the kind of spicy that leaves you teary-eyed, wounded and begging for mercy. But a good heat that leaves your lips tingling for little while afterwards. I have an affinity for pickled jalapenos and hot sauce. I conquered pickled jalapeno rings many years ago but had yet to attempt hot sauce. A lot of the recipes for canning hot sauce I found were tomato based with hot pepper as an ingredient at the bottom of the list.

I needed a recipe that made hot peppers the star of the show; the hot peppers Fermenting Hot Sauce are the only vegetable besides a few hardy herbs still lingering from my Summer garden. I found a recipe for fermenting hot sauce and was able to incorporate my fish pepper and red jalapeno harvest. Not only have I never attempted my own hot sauce, but this is my first experiment with fermentation, to which I have been fairly tentative. I started the mix a few days ago, but the process can take around a month to complete. At the end of it all, it's supposed to taste like classic Louisiana hot sauce. I'll check back in at the end of the experiment.

Noggin Sized Puffball J.Crawford I was also lucky enough, by my standards, to have acquired four giant puffball mushrooms this week. I remember as a child kicking the small puffballs and watching them puff a little black cloud after they had gone to spore. Keep in mind once again that I am not an expert in wild mushroom foraging. However, the giant puffball mushrooms I found are edible. As long as when sliced in half they are pure white with no signs of spores they are generally safe to consume.

Christmas Craft Show At Behnke's
Saturday, Nov 8th
Check out our new location for the craft show! In the large Annual Greenhouse.
T.O. Create
Every year we face the challenge of where to put all of the crafters that want to attend out annual Christmas Craft Show.  This year, we decided to put a limit on just how many spaces we could offer.. Sigh... How do you say no to someone? I sure can't. As more and more calls and applications came in, our store manager Sissy McKenzie and Events Coordinator Susi O'Hara came up with a great idea! We will move it all to our big greenhouse near the parking lot! This opened up a lot more area with spaces to spare!

This year we will again conduct a raffle to benefit the Prince George's County Police Department's Young Explorers Post 600: PLUS, we want to welcome back the Beltsville Lion's Club, which will be selling some great food!

We are very excited to have author Leann Smith  appear at our craft show from 9 to noon. She will be talking about and signing her beautiful new book The Magic Christmas Key.

Visit with crafters and artisans while discovering new and unique treasures. This will be our 7th year for the Craft Show. Each year we get many new crafters, along with some of our past favorites. Find something special for gift giving or a treat for yourself.

Plus.....
  • Behnke's will be collecting Toys for Tots.
Here are some of the vendors that will be attending.....
