One Of My Favorite Seasons~ Fall
|
I admit it, I love Maryland. You can drive to the beach or the mountains in 3 hours,, and you have 4 beautiful seasons. And while Winter can be challenging for me I really do love them all! This week was the beginning of Fall. A time of cool nights, football, chili and, of course, decorating with all the colors of Autumn. Today I noticed the first leaves changing which for me means time to get my porch ready. This year since my grandson, Aaron, is 2 1/2 and loves everything he sees, I have decided to go all out. I have not told my husband yet but I have ideas! Lots of ideas! They include a visit to our church's thrift shop for some old clothes, some straw, and my husband's old hat. Then I need pumpkins! Lots of pumpkins and, of course, some mums and pansies. I have been all over Pinterest, saving everything I can find to create just the right look that will make Aaron giggle. Yup, Fall is one of my very favorite seasons!

Behnke's FREE Garden Club Specials: Japanese Anemones (Windflowers), Pansies & Violas All 25% OFF
|
Sales thru September 28, 2014
|

What a beautiful season Fall is. As Japanese Anemones begin blooming and dance on the cool breezes the season springs alive. The big, satiny flowers adorn the garden in shades of pink-lavender, rose and white. Depending on the variety, the flowers may be single or semi-double and plants will range in height from 18 to 24 inches tall. They prefer a humus rich area that gets a light shade in the middle of the day.
Pansies flower and look their best in cool weather; that is, in fall and in spring. They may be either fall- or spring-planted. They will usually be in bloom when you purchase them, and, if fall-planted, continue flowering into December or later. They stop blooming during the cold of winter, when temperatures are consistently below freezing, but if given some care, the plants will hunker down and survive the cold. Do You Make The Best Chili Ever?
|
Want to try your hand at our competition Chili Cook Off? You can pit your culinary skills against other seasoned cooks at Behnke's 7th Annual Officially Sanctioned Chili Cook-Off! Maybe you would like to enter under your business or club name? This is a great way to bring awareness to your organization while benefiting the Beltsville Rotary Club. Email Stephanie Fleming at sfleming@behnkes.net for the official details and to be put in contact with the Mike Watkins from the Mason-Dixon Pod Of Chili Cooks. Competition Chili It's chili-eating season. It's also the height of chili-cookoff season. But before you connect "eating chili" with "cookoff chili," understand that they are two quite different animals. That's right: Big-league chili isn't really meant to be eaten, except for one spoonful by a judge. Cookoff chili has become a rarefied beast, like a well-groomed show dog. Think of it as the NASCAR of the food world. It looks like chili on the outside, but under the hood it's a whole 'nuther thing. "To improve your chili, remove an ingredient," says an old adage. That wouldn't leave much room for improvement in a classic bowl of competition red. Competition guidelines are rigid: The chili presented for judging must be made with some kind of meat (beef, pork, chicken, sausage -- it could even be a firm fish), sauce and spices. No beans. ("There are 2,000 kinds of beans," explains a spokesman for the International Chili Society, one of the two not-for-profit organizations that organize American chili cookoffs. "If we allowed beans it would become a bean competition.")

When and How to Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs ~ by Larry Hurley
Spring flowering bulbs, including such favorites as tulips and daffodils, are one of the signs that winter is over and are a true delight. While the bulbs themselves are nothing to look at, the flowers they produce come in all colors, and they really brighten the landscape. Bulbs are underground storage structures that allow a plant to survive harsh climatic conditions. The wild forms of most of the winter-hardy, spring-flowering bulbs commonly planted by gardeners are found mostly in Europe and Asia, especially in Mediterranean countries, such as Spain and Turkey; Morocco in North Africa, and the Middle East. They are often found in areas with a Mediterranean climate: relatively wet winters, short springs, and hot, dry summers.

'Think Fall, Think Pumpkins'

Nostalgia [no-stal-juh]; n. A sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time. Or in other words--Fall bonfires. On my way home this evening, I was graced with one of the strongest ties to my sensory memory. I love the smell of a campfire. It brings me back to almost three decades of backyard bonfires at my parent's home and camping with family and friends at Greenbrier State Park; where the main entertainment is a balance of great company and the mesmerizing and dancing flames
This weekend past, my family spent a weekend get-away at Deep Creek Lake

with my parent's best friends and my oldest and first friend. Beneath the twinkling stars and enveloped in the crisp Fall evening, we had a campfire and roasted marshmallows; prefaced by a delicious homemade supper accompanied by homemade pumpkin pie. No flavor elicits Fall quite like pumpkin in its various preparations. No need to wait until Thanksgiving to break into baking and chomping on pumpkin pie. Before we left for the weekend, we stopped by Larriland Farm and picked up a few autumn necessities; Honeycrisp Apples and Sugar Pumpkins.
