Another 4th of July and the discussion already has started..Where to go to see the BEST firework display? Growing up in Beltsville, I seem to recall going to Greenbelt Lake and watching them a few times and that was fun.. Mostly I recall the times my Uncle Roland was around and we would have our home show. That was always pretty intense. When we got married and had kids, we started going to the different carnivals around the area and found that the Damascus Fire Dept. had by far the best fireworks display. Time went on and the kids got older and we started having crabs on the 4th of July with my mother and my step-father. We would enjoy sparklers and watch different neighbors light off their fireworks in the distance.
Then came the year we drove to Daytona to see the Firecracker 400 NASCAR race! After the race was over we drove back to the beach, and what a surprise we had. All the private firework shows on the beach.. Oh my, each condo along the Daytona Beach would try to outdo the other.. Bigger and better they would get.. You could also watch all the boats in the ocean going down to the boardwalk for the public show, which we could see from our deck. Life was good. But then it got even better! After a few more years of very HOT NASCAR races held during the day. Daytona International Speedway decided to go under the lights. We were there for the first night time race of the then called "Pepsi 400 Race". That race ended with the much anticipated firework show... Okay, hands down the BEST FIREWORKS SHOW EVER! At least for me. The show seemed to go on forever! All happening in front of us. Then the slow push to get back to the beach to watch the firework madness on the beach. Times change, kids grow up, and we now watch the race on TV, and once again see the occasional firework set off in the distance. But I will always remember the thrill in my children's eyes as they watched the fireworks each year.
Happy 4th of July from the Behnke family to yours. We hope each of you enjoy a safe 4th of July and have fun watching all those fireworks!

You see them everywhere! Lovely drifts of color brightening a summer day, Daylilies ARE an old standard. Gardeners recognized how resilient and versatile they were right from the beginning. Requiring very little upkeep, they grow best in the sun, or in light shade blooming reliably year after year. The bold flowers in red, pink, yellow, orange, gold, or purple may seem simple but in reality can vary from long, thin, trumpet forms to frilly-edged semi-doubles. A must for every garden, daylilies will not let you down, unless you have a deer problem.
Pick up some of the old standards at this sale, but be sure to visit the National Capital Daylily Club display on Sunday, and browse their offerings. They will have many unique and modern cultivars for sale, it's a once-a-year opportunity. Behnke's sale does not apply to the Daylily Club plant sale.

Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia)
|
Also known as Sweet Pepperbush, Clethra is a native flowering shrub that is just coming into bloom now for the summer. Strongly sweet-smelling spikes of white or light pink blooms appear in mid- to late summer and attract a whole host of pollinators, including butterflies. Tolerance of sun, shade, wet or average soil puts Summersweet high on our list of favorite native shrubs. Leaves turn yellow in autumn and (don't be alarmed) resprout late in the spring. Dwarf varieties grow to about 3' tall or less; the regular forms reach from 5' to 8' tall. Happy plants can sucker a bit, spreading from the roots, but are easy to contain.
