Thanks, Potomac, for Sixteen Terrific Years!
|
This week, we announced to the staff at our Garden Center and Florist at Potomac that we will be moving back home to our flagship garden center in Beltsville as the key to our long-term plan to "grow" the company. This was not an easy decision, but we think it's the best way to offer the selection and ambiance that our customers expect. I would like to welcome back to Beltsville those of you that used to shop here, and invite those of you that have never been to our Beltsville garden center to come and visit. We are located on Route One in Beltsville, just a few minutes from both the Beltway and the ICC. You will find a wide selection of plants and garden products, plenty of parking, and a pleasant atmosphere where you can shop for foliage and blooming gift plants, flowering annuals and herbs under cover in any weather. And of course lots of perennials, trees and shrubs in the "great outdoors." Our garden center in Beltsville is one on the largest in the county and we would love to share it with you.
My grandparents Rose & Albert Behnke started their garden center on the Beltsville site in 1930. We are looking forward to celebrating 85 years of gardening in the Washington area next year. We know you won't be disappointed with a visit to Behnke's at Beltsville.
Starting this Thursday, June 12, our Garden Center at Potomac will be having a MOVING SALE with all of our merchandise at the Potomac store only at least 20% off (excluding propane gas). This sale will be for product that is in stock at the Potomac location only and does not include anything of Walpole Outdoors, which is an independent company with which we share the property at Potomac. No special orders, no transfers from Beltsville.
Thanks again for your many years of support at our Potomac location. We've enjoyed working with you and hope to see you again soon. We'll be at Potomac through the Fourth of July weekend, and hope you stop by for a visit. All of your Potomac benefits and warranties, including membership in our Garden Club, will follow you to Beltsville.

Summer Time is Coming to the Mid-Atlantic
|
by Larry Hurley, Behnke's Perennial Buyer
|
And just in time! We were running out of things to complain about, so how about a dose of heat and humidity?
A lot of folks like the heat, and the heat makes some plants thrive as well. Herbs really develop their flavor in the heat of summer. Basil from the garden is just bursting with flavor. The summer vegetables like peppers really need the heat to flourish, too.
What would like the heat more than tropicals? Nothing, really. That's why we have beaucoup hibiscus, mandevilla (on sale this week) and other blooming tropicals for deck or patio. If you can't get to the tropics, bring them to you. Get a Hawaiian shirt from your favorite clothier, a mandevilla vine or two for us, and a cool drink from the 'fridge, and you might as well be in Aruba.
In perennials we go from the spring bloomers to summer bloomers. The summer perennials tend to have much longer bloom seasons than the spring perennials, and we bring in fresh plants all summer long. Think meadows and prairies and plants like garden phlox, black-eyed susans, purple coneflower, perennial sunflowers, Helen's flower...these will be coming into bloom in June and July, and they all love sunny locations. We'll be stocking more heavily as they come into bloom. Ornamental grasses add texture and a vertical line, and are indispensible for the casual meadow look.
In shrubs we have hydrangeas and crape myrtles, for shade and sun respectively, and we always seem to have everyone's favorite, blueberry bushes, in stock.
Annuals graduate from little spring pots to big summer pots for instant color, and at the end of July, the garden mums start arriving, full of buds and just waiting for late summer and fall to burst into bloom.Annuals make for great combination plantings in your containers, especially when mixed with perennials and tropicals for a really eclectic look.
So come on in to Behnke's at Beltsville, all summer long. We laugh at the heat. We might even laugh at your Hawaiian shirt!!

Bees & Neonicotinoids: Behnke's Policy Statement
|
Behnke Nurseries is concerned about the health of bees and other pollinators. Working with the environmental group Friends of the Earth, we have developed a company policy regarding the sale
and use of neonicotinoid-containing insecticides at Behnke Nurseries. While the scientists continue to work on the causes of bee colony collapse disorder, we feel it is prudent to reduce the use of neonicotinoids as they are implicated as one of the factors contributing to this problem.
