Afternoon with the Great Grandparents
|
It is a well known fact in my family that I am never ever without my camera and like any other grandmother I love to share. This past Sunday, our grandson came for a visit and of course as soon as his parents left for their movie date, my husband and I walked next door to visit my in-laws with the little guy! Aaron was so excited because he knew that meant being outside and exploring. My mother-in-law has created the most amazing garden behind her home this year. With raised garden beds full of peas, onions and other delicious vegetables, this year she added her table-top gardens filled with carrots, radishes and more. Also, while it is hard to see in the photo, she took old whiskey barrels and filled them with peppers and tomatoes along with some summer annuals for color. Aaron had a great time helping water all the plants while Great Grandma took the time to explain to him everything that was in the garden. Then we were off to the BIG GARDEN as Aaron calls it. Of course we had to walk IN the garden but that was okay... I am sure a few weeds were pulled along the way. The plan is to finish tilling this week and start planting all the other vegetables plants. I often laugh because between us all we grow so many vegetables it seems like we can feed the whole community. I tend to bring all of our extra produce to the nursery to share with co-workers, and my in-laws are always sharing their bounty with the senior center they belong to. Oh, and do you see that cute little blue and white flower in the second row? Oh wait, that's Aaron! There went a tulip but who cares! We have a great selection of vegetable plants at both of our garden centers, plus check out our Beltsville Raised Garden Bed demonstration planting while you're picking out your peppers and tomatoes!

Behnke's Garden Club Special: Ornamental Perennial Salvias 25% Off in our Perennial Department (Excludes annual varieties, Salvia splendens, etc. in our Annuals Department and the herb Salvias in our Herb Department. If we had any Salvias in our Houseplant Department, we would exclude them too, because this is all about the Perennial Department. June is Perennial Gardening Month!!) Offer good thru June 1st
|
Salvia is a standard of the perennial garden, blooming in May or June for three to four weeks. If cut back hard after blooming, it will send out new leaves and usually a second set of blooms, albeit not as showy as the first. It comes in passionate purple, blue, a nice pink, and an okay white. Plant in full sun. Deer tend to leave salvia alone. We also carry some of the let us say, marginally-hardy summer bloomers, which offer pink or red or purple flowers that are popular with the hummingbird crowd. If planted early in the season in a protected area, they will often overwinter here. They are popular container garden plants for full sun. Special Offer For Garden Club members ONLY, this weekend only! May 31 & June 1 All Roses, including Knockouts 25% OFF Must be a Behnke Garden Club member to get these special prices.

Miri Talabac, Behnke's Woody Plant Buyer
I think it's a safe bet to say that everyone has grown or at least seen hydrangeas; they permeate the American landscape. What many may not have experienced is the range of hydrangeas out there to try. There's a trifecta, if you will, of hydrangeas that are the most commonly encountered: Smooth ('Annabelle' is the star child of this group), Panicle and Bigleaf (also known as mopheads, lacecaps, or simply Hortensias; there are a gazillion of these). Each beautiful in its own right, we'll showcase these plus some others that we feel are among the best to grow.

All Annual Market Packs 30% OFF! (while supplies last)
|
Many people love to buy their annuals in market packs. While smaller in size, you get more plants for your money; however, by June growers stop offering them as they just get harder to take care of in the greenhouse--they dry out quickly as it gets hot. June is also a transition time when we start offering larger size annuals for your garden and containers. All this leads to special savings for you as we put ALL of our market packs of annuals on sale. Some of the types of annuals you might find during this sale will be begonias, marigolds, petunias and, of course, vinca. All great summer-blooming annuals that grow fast and bloom all summer and for some, till the first light frost in the fall. Don't blink: when they are gone, they are gone!

 Materials Needed - Holding Tank
- Net to Cover Holding Tank
- Pump and Tubing (Could use your pond pump)
- Fish net to catch fish and scavengers
- Pond Thermometer
- Chlorine/Chloramine Remover such as Ammo Lock
Directions - Set up your holding tank next to the pond.
- Now start pumping the water out of the pond. First fill the holding tank, and then the rest can go into the lawn or flower beds. Great Fertilizer! Friends, Gardeners, Plant Lovers: join us at Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville Maryland on Saturday, June 7th for the fourth annual Garden Party to benefit the Friends of Brookside Gardens. This is an opportunity for interested people to see what garden clubs have to offer their members, meet plant enthusiasts, ask questions, and maybe even join a club. Representatives from many different organizations will be participating. The idea is for members of different groups to share with each other and pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to Behnke's gardening customers. But there's more to it than that-- anyone who brings a garden plant from home can participate in the "plant swap". |
