The Kiss Of The Sun For Pardon

 This past Monday, while walking though the garden center, I noticed a woman putting a Peace Lilly into one of our ceramic pots. I stopped to admire her choice, and she replied that the wind had blown the plant over, so she thought she would put it in the pot to stand it up! Smiling, I thanked her and began a wonderful conversation with Joanne, a long time Behnke customer.

She began by telling me she has been shopping at Behnke's since the late 1930's, first with her parents, and then after she got married and had her own home. She was so excited to be back at the nursery, and she shared with me that she had not been here for 25 years. She had been living in Florida but recently moved back her to live with her daughter. So started a trip down Memory Lane, talking about the beautiful violets my grandmother grew and her interactions with different members of my family.
She told me about her favorite poem, which was also my grandmother's. We used to sell wonderful garden plaques at the nursery. She said that when Mamie Eisenhower was in the White House, the First Lady's sister gave her
Mrs. Eisenhower a plaque that had this poem. The plaque was placed in the Rose Garden at the White House. She remembered how she discovered that the White House was selling these plaques in their gift shop, and how she longed for one. But times being what they were and having four children to take care of, money was not there for extras like that. Imagine her excitement on Mother's Day that year when her husband presented her with a beautiful box with the garden plaque in it.
I am not sure if she said he bought it from the White House or Behnke's but either way, she treasured it and still has it. My grandmother's plaque is in the garden of one of my cousins. I found this photo of a newer one on ebay and I am thinking it just might make a great Mother's Day gift for me.
