You Can't Have A Rainbow Without A Little Rain!
|
They say that April Showers Bring May Flowers! I am so ready for May. While we have had two very beautiful weekends of Spring weather, I know if you're anything like me, your champing at the bit to actually get out in your yards and gardens and plant! My poor husband has been looking out the window today, wondering when he can get down to our vegetable garden to plow. I don't think it will be today or tomorrow but the weather is looking pretty good for this weekend. Last weekend, my brother-in-law was at Rose Hill Manor in Frederick with his team of Mules. The young lady, Hanna (18) driving the team in the above photo, has entered his mules in competitions at fairs and parades over the past few years. I told my husband that maybe we should just have them get the garden prepared! Remember, your can't have a rainbow without a little rain!

Herb Sale: 25% OFF All Herbs to May 4th
|
Herbs are essential ingredients for flavoring and spicing up recipes all over the world. Without them, eating would be pretty boring. Herbs add flavor, character, and uniqueness to recipes. Used alone or in combination, they help to make cooking fun and enjoyable, and eating a sheer pleasure!
Whether you plant them yourself, or pick them up at the grocery store or farmer's market, adding fresh herbs is a quick way to turn your meals into experience. Once you begin to use fresh herbs in your favorite recipes, you'll never return to using just dried herbs again.
Besides helping flavor foods when cutting back on salt, fat and sugar, herbs may offer additional benefits of their own. Researchers are finding many culinary herbs (both fresh and dried) have antioxidants that may help protect against such diseases as cancer and heart disease.
If you've always thought you'd like to plant an herb garden, now is a good time to start one. Do it the easy way, and plant your garden with herb plants from Behnke Nurseries. We carry dozens of varieties. Our favorite herb, basil, prefers warm weather, so wait until May before planting it out. Herb gardens are fun and easy to grow. They also take up little space. Put your herb garden up against your house or garage wall, the idea is to keep them close so you can walk out and pick the herbs you need for the day's meal. Or, plant some in a container on your deck or porch. Experiment with planting a combination-container, mixing herbs with ornamental annuals. A few herbs in your container garden will add texture, and you will get a whiff of wonderful fragrances as you brush by.
Tips: If you are growing perennials or biennials, make sure to plan your herb garden so as not to disturb them the next year. And remember, as a rule of thumb, herbs need full sun and well-drained soil. Sun, sun, sun. Sun and heat are what really give herbs their zing. There is no comparison between fresh basil from your garden or container and that sold in stores. Also, on the whole, herbs are deer resistant.
Note: 25% off sale includes lavender in our perennial department.
