Behind the Scenes

display
Have you ever wondered about some of the display props around the garden center?  Every time you turn around you can find something different and unique.  We are very lucky that our graphic design team-of-two, under the direction of long-time Behnke employee, Susan O'Hara turns out some pretty cool things. They design and produce all of our signage and handouts.  Susi also plans our events, workshops and classes thoughout the year. Working with Susi, we have Adrienne Neff. This quiet young woman seems to be happiest with paint brushes, drills and hammers and saws. Many times we find her digging though the dumpsters, scrap lumber and pallets finding materials to recycle to make her awesome creations! Whenever the staff comes to her with an idea, it eventually shows up somewhere in our garden centers.  Plus last year Adrienne took on the task of writing our radio commercials and creating the post cards that we mail out thoughout the year to our active Garden Club Members.
Deer-leerious ~ Gardening just got a little easier
This annoying late cold weather has slowed down our spring stocking in the Perennial Department, but we're on the move (it keeps our feet from freezing to the ground).  Coming over the next several weeks to our Perennial Department: Deer-leerious Deer-resistant Perennials!
perennial farm
Plants that deer don't like to eat! Our friends at The Perennial Farm have brought us a new program to make gardening 'sans deer' easier. First decide whether you need plants for sun (yellow tags) or shade (green tags), and then follow the rating system on the tag as you make your selections. Resistance is Not Futile!!

#1, Not Eatin' This! - Highest deer resistance.
#2, Can't Stand This! - High deer resistance, when highly stressed they may nibble.
#3, Not Likin' This! - Medium to High deer resistance. If hungry or they have developed peculiar tastes in plants, deer may graze.

If you have deer issues, combine deer resistant plants with the proper use of repellants, and you are likely to have at least one part of the garden that the deer leave alone.

Also this year watch for tables of native plants; plants for birds an butterflies; ;plants for rain gardens; and of course, Stepables and Treadwell perennial ground covers.

It's going to be a beautiful spring! Anything good is worth waiting for.

For The Love of Food! ~ Chef Cole (Owner Cafe' Rue, Beltsville MD)
Chef Cole Cate Rue
By Chef Cole, Cafe' Rue, Beltsville, MD
Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness or in my case good food. The pursuit of the American dream consumes most young people in my generation. You go to college, graduate, intern somewhere, and start working toward obtaining pieces of the American dream - a home with the white picket fence, the perfect spouse, and 2.5 children. I wish someone would explain how one gives birth to .5 of a child. I was in full pursuit of my happiness with a successful career as a sales account manager for a Fortune 500 IT Company. My seven-year career took me to three states and was the catalyst to me fulfilling the second part of my dream; meeting my beautiful wife.

Rewind to February (2012), and the economic downturn quickly turned my dream upside down. Life has a funny way of changing your trajectory and priorities. When my career ended I quickly found myself faced with the choice of looking for another sales job or embarking into the unknown and following my wife's advice to pursue my love of food.
