Wine Tasting this Saturday At Behnke's in Beltsville
|
We are so excited to welcome back to Behnke's our good friend and Beltsville neighbor, Larry Pendleton, owner of Old Line Fine Wine & Bistro. This coming Saturday, March 21, Old Line will be hosting a FREE Wine Tasting at our Open House in Beltsville, from 1 to 4pm. If you have not had a chance to stop by Old Line Fine Wine & Bistro you really need to take time to check them out. They are one of Maryland's largest fine wine superstores, but I love going there for lunch! Their bistro is the perfect place to sit back and relax and enjoy some great food with good company, and the menu offers great choices!
Old Line has also recently opened their indoor Market Place on Fridays from 4 to 8, year round. They have many different vendors participating with gourmet foods and treats! I know am going to stop in this Friday night.

A Touch Of Spring ~ Edgeworthia
|
Edgworthia is one of those plants that is fun to drool over when you visit Behnke's. It's the sort of plant that makes your visit to our garden centers so much fun. It's a shrub that blooms in late winter or early spring, and is what we would call a "collector's plant," a plant for someone who likes some challenges. It's hardy to zone 7, probably best grown in the city and not in far-flung ice-capitals like Frederick. Besides the interesting flower clusters, it's very fragrant, and that in itself would move it to the top of my list of plants to try. In Japan the bark is used for fine paper making for calligraphy, and was at one time used for making Japanese paper money. You could call it your very own money tree. Miri, our woody plant buyer, is a "collector." She loves to bring in a few of this and a few of that to stoke your horticultural fires. Every week there are new or oddball plants for you to look at. Catch Edgeworthia this weekend. In very limited supply at both of our garden centers.

Late Winter/ Early Spring Color For Your Garden~ Hundreds in Stock, Many New Varieties
25% off of Regular Prices: March 17 to March 30

We keep talking about them, but they are just that good. At my place, the Helleborus niger, or Christmas Rose, is in full bloom. This snow and cold weather don't seem to bother it at all. The flower buds are showing on the Lenten Roses, and I know that they'll just sit tight for a couple of days, and then continue to grow and open with warmer weather. (They are not even remotely related to roses by the way, but the flower looks sort-of like a wild rose.) Like other normally-evergreen perennials, this winter has taken a toll on the leaves, giving them burned edges. But as the flowers appear, so does the new foliage. Eventually I'll take the older leaves off because I'm a tidy gardener, but you don't really have to. The old leaves will lie flat on the ground, and the newer leaves will cover them. By the end of the month, my garden will be full of white, ivory, pink, and even a few red hellebore flowers. I know the rabbits and the deer will leave them alone, and that the flowers will cheer me along all through the spring time. Every year I buy some new ones, and this year will be no exception. With lots in stock and lots more coming, I can hardly wait. In fact, I think I'm going to put them on sale: 25% off for the next two weeks, so you don't have to wait at all.
