Goodbye Winter, It's Spring!
|
 | It seems appropriate, given the cold weather we have had, that we share this picture with you. John Collins of Wilbraham took to the snow in his front yard and created this, calling it "The Icy Grip of Winter." |
The cold weather has lasted for so long that we've run out of things to say about it. You know that when 40 degrees feels warm, that we've had enough of winter.
The ten day forecast is lookin' better than it has with no snow in the forecast, and warmer days ahead. The greenhouses still offer you refuge from the cold, with thousands of foliage and blooming plants.
Our staff is tired of talking to each other,(not really) and are eager to talk to you about your plans for spring. It's time to put some color back in your life: white and brown is calling out for Green, and Yellow and Orange and Red. It's time for the snow to melt. The only white we want to see this weekend is your teeth as you smile with the realization that Spring is Finally Coming.

Gardening Basics: Simply Put, What to expect in March ~ Larry Hurley
|
March: the month of the onset of Daylight Savings Time and the vernal equinox. "In like a lion, out like a lamb," etc. As your gardening interest starts to revive like sap in a sugar maple, what is there to look forward to at Behnke's in March? March is sort of a funny month, very weather dependent. Right now, there is snow on the ground and its COLD. In two weeks, it could easily be 70 degrees. With that in mind, we horticulturists are now "ramping up." Staff that we haven't seen since Christmas is coming back to work, and the trucks are rolling in.

Don't let the idea of planting intimidate you--all the bulb needs from you is to be placed in the ground at the right time of year, some water to quench its thirst and a little time to grow. Still have no clue where to start? Stop by either of our garden centers and we will be happy to answer any of your questions.
Our beautiful quality bulbs have been arriving each week from Holland.
Spring planting bulbs are bulbs that should be planted in the mid-to-late spring and bloom in the summer. The number of spring bulbs is quite extensive, but the most popular varieties include: gladiolus, tuberous begonias, dahlias, lilies, freesias, anemonse, tigridia, iris, callas, cannas, caladiums, and ranunculus...to name a few.

Spring-Blooming Camellias: A Garden Classic
|
Singles, doubles and semi-doubles, Camellias grace the spring garden with substantial beauty. When you plant early, mid and late spring bloomers alongside azaleas, daffodils and tulips, they create quite a show.
|
Witchhazel (Hamamelis): Amazing Winter Blooms
|
The poets who write about bleak winters obviously never had Witchhazel in their yards. These large shrubs/small trees average 10 ft. tall and wide and grow in beautiful vase shapes. They are adorned with frilly yellow, red or coppery-orange, fragrant flowers in late Winter/early Spring.

Scales & Tails Returns to Behnke's Spring Open House at the Beltsville Location
|
March 22, 2014 11am to 2pm
|
We are so excitied to welcome Scales & Tails back to Behnke's Spring Open House. Many people consider it a tremendous thrill to catch a glimpse of a mysterious owl as it flies across a dark country road at night, or to see a majestic hawk soaring high in the sky on a bright clear day. Fewer people have seen these creatures from merely a few feet away.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources provides this opportunity to Marylanders every day. Scales & Tales, an environmental education program of the Maryland Park Service, affords people the opportunity to see live wildlife, mostly native to Maryland, up close and personal.
Behnke's Spring Open House will be on March 22 and 23 at both our Beltsville & Potomac locations!
