This is the year I will scan all our old family photos into my computer! No excuses! Not anymore, since my husband got me this really easy-to-use copier/scanner/fax/printer machine...Just to try it out, I took one of my very favorite photos of my mother, Sonja Behnke Festerling, from 1949, and within a few moments here she is! This photo of mom was taken at our Beltsville location when she was about 16 years old. I have a project I have wanted to do for many years. Scan all the letters I have that my grandmother received from the White House over the years. Most were thank-you notes from the First Ladies for the gift of African Violets. My plan is to make a book of these to give to family members and if I figure out how, maybe even share them with you! There! I wrote it down.. I have a goal. Wish me luck!---Stephanie Fleming

Birds in Winter: To Feed or Not to Feed?
By Natalie Brewer, University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardener
It's an age-old question - to feed or not to feed the wild songbirds that come so willingly to our yards in the cold of winter. Some people believe that feeding wild birds can cause more harm than good and create problems for birds, such as disrupting their natural cycles, preventing timely migrations, or causing birds to depend on handouts rather than foraging for themselves. However, the truth is that these are all myths and feeding birds is actually beneficial to their survival.
In the wild, birds would normally depend on habitats that include native plants which provide seeds, nuts and berries. But every year there are fewer and fewer of these habitats left because of development and the encroachment of non-native, invasive plants. So every year, there are fewer and fewer natural sources of food for our wild birds. In addition, during cold weather, birds need to fuel up on an abundance of extra calories to stay warm. They burn off an incredible amount of energy trying to keep their body temperature up when outdoor temperatures drop. Birds will also expend a high proportion of energy searching for food. So providing supplemental food for wild birds will actually help them keep their calorie-intake high which will improve their chances to survive the brutally cold weather.

Visiting the White House at Christmas
by Susan Harris, Behnke's Garden Blogger
Season's greetings from the White House! Yeah, that's me standing beneath the presidential seal (major photo-op) and I know you all recognize the grand north entrance. If I'd planned ahead and contacted my congressman I could have taken the White House tour with the general public BUT for some reason cameras aren't allowed during them. (Holiday bummer, right?) Then eureka - an invitation to tour AND photograph the White House was sent to all staff and volunteers for the National Park Service, so this past weekend, on a ridiculously balmy night, I was there.
