 | My Grandson, Aaron
|
This past month I have been playing along with a lot of folks on Facebook where each day we list what we are thankful for. It has been fun for me to write silly things like I am thankful that I have a dumpster so I could easily throw out years of stuff that has no value to anyone (really who has a dumpster in their back yard?)
The more I think about this whole project on Facebook, when it comes down to it I am most thankful for my family, friends, co-workers, and all the folks in our military that have made such enormous sacrifices for our country.
I am so very lucky to be able to watch my little grandson once a week, plus work with some of the best people I know at Behnke's. I have a job I love, and get to meet so many wonderful people each day. Life is good! :)
Send us your stories and photos of what you are grateful for this Thanksgiving. You can post them on Behnke's Facebook page or send them to sfleming@behnkes.net and I will share them next week. |

"IS IT STILL A GOOD TIME TO PLANT...?"
|
The answer is an enthusiastic "...YES"!
|
The cool season is ideal for establishing roots, without the stress of new growth & summer heat or drought.
Deciduous plants (those that drop their leaves), conifers (needled evergreens), many broadleaf evergreens (Hollies & others) & cool-weather annuals (Pansies & Ornamental Kale & Cabbage) are fine for late fall planting.
Plus, remember that we also have our BIG Fall Sale going on right now.
All Perennials & Woodies are 25% to 50% Off (excluding Dwarf Alberta Spruce and Miniature 4" Evergreens)

Hostess Gifts At Behnke's
|
November is always a time for change at the nursery. Outside, everyone is busy moving all the trees and perennials, getting them ready for winter, plus making room for our shipments of fresh cut Christmas trees and greens. Inside, we have our Christmas Shops open and we are moving tables around for our plants for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons that have been arriving each day.
Wow! The Poinsettias are here but there are so many other beautiful plants to decorate your homes in addition to your poinsettias. With all the holiday dinners and parties coming up, a plant hostess gift is always welcomed. Consider a Christmas Cactus or Cyclamen this year when picking something up for your hostess. We also have a great selection of Orchids, African Violets, along with potted Mums. Which brings us back to our beautiful Behnke Poinsettias--"Would you prefer a red or white to complement your dinner?" means Poinsettias to us. Of course, we're all a bit odd. Check out our beautiful baskets filled with houseplants and poinsettias , perfect for the Thanksgiving table.

Tapestry- Delightful cherry-red bracts atop grayish-green and yellow variegated foliage. Sure to create excitement with all your guests.
The wild-child of poinsettias, 'Sorona White Glitter' has bracts speckled with white and red. Unlike traditional poinsettias, the colored bracts are mixed throughout the plant and are offset with deep green leaves.

We are not really sure what goes on in Miri's head but she LOVES unloading the tractor trailers that arrive! Her enthusiasm just makes us have to snap a photo each time. You have seen her before but today was something else. The smells of pine and the sight of Miri just throwing herself on this mountain of trees made me laugh.. Thank you Larry Bristow for this great photo.
So, one week before Thanksgiving and on schedule, our magnificent Christmas Trees are here along with fresh greens and wreaths!

Walk over and say hello to the designers in our Florist Shop. Look at the lovey Holiday arraignments they create each day.
The house on the south side of the property was the office of the original garden center. In those early days, the Hahn family lived upstairs. By the 1990's, having fallen into somewhat of a state of disrepair, it served as a Halloween haunted house. Behnke's has converted this building into a "Florist Shop". The florist maintains an excellent selection of unusual fresh flowers, both for walk-in sales and delivery.
Explore our Christmas Shop In Potomac. Only in our Potomac Christmas Shop will you find JingleNog's collectible, heirloom quality, European glass ornaments. These beautiful ornaments are hand made by skilled artisans in Italy and Poland. Every JingleNog begins with designer Melissa Byrne's drawings and stories. Each piece is classically crafted using the traditional European methods of mouth blowing and hand painting glass.
We are so excited to be carrying a new line of breed specific dog ornaments for Behnke's. Lisa Kelechava is founder and president of Joy To The World Collectibles, Inc. based in Knoxville, Tennessee. The company designs, manufactures and distributes high end holiday European ornaments to upscale retailers throughout the world. She started the company in 1998 with just thirteen ornaments and the company now offers almost 1000 styles between Holiday, Pet and Collegiate collections. The Pet Set Dogs has 130 breeds and almost 400 different types dog ornaments and they are endorsed by Betty White, who is President Emeritus of Morris Animal Foundation. A portion of each sale goes to Morris Animal Foundation for Research to Protect, Treat & Cure Animals. JTW is also known for its very detailed molds. Each are hand made with heavy German Glass.
