Tulip & Daffodil Planting Memories
|
 | Albert & Rose Behnke's Burtonsville Home |
This past week when a few of us were talking about planting bulbs I mentioned how happy I was with the results of my mass planting of 200 daffodils last Fall. I went on and on about how I was out there with my husband and got them all in and in the Spring how beautiful our fence line looked . This reminded how my grandfather, Albert Behnke, would bring a crew of Behnke employees to his home in Burtonsville before Thanksgiving and put them to work. Even Susi O'Hara, our graphic manager, was put to work as a teenager. "Two hundred bulbs", they laughed! "Try 5,000!" As Alfred Millard, our company's President remembers, "It seemed each year it was always on the coldest days." But plant they did! Dig, Drop and cover, then repeat. And make sure those rows are straight! Somehow I must have missed this wonderful experience. Must have been inside making German Spritz cookies with my grandmother. I went digging th ough my old photos of their home and found this one of the front driveway. My grandfather loved to have big blocks of bold color around his home. If I remember correctly, along the edge of the tulips were rows of pansies with their happy faces blowing in the breeze. I think I might have to pick up another 100 daffodils to add to my fence line. Next Spring, I'll share a photo of the results. While supplies last all our bulbs will be 50% Off (SALE EXCLUDES Amaryllis and Paperwhites)

Cyclamen are one of the most popular holiday plants in Europe. I can definitely see why. The flowers come in shades of red and white and pink. Some are ruffled, some are edged with white, some are multicolored and some smell sweetly. The perky flowers are held above beautiful silver veined foliage and the plants flower for months. Cyclamen like to be cool. Wouldn't it be pretty to have a basket of cyclamen outside your front door to greet your guests? You need to take the plants inside or put them in your garage if the temperature goes below freezing. Cyclamen like part to full shade when outside and bright light when kept indoors. Water the plants on the side of the pot to avoid rotting the plant crown. Keep the plant moist but not soggy. Remove spent flowers and yellow leaves and your plant should continue blooming through April. Behnkes has a beautiful selection of cyclamen arriving weekly at both stores. We are happy to help you select a plant and, if you'd like, a lovely basket to beautify your home - whether inside or out.

Fall is a great time of year to enjoy the birds at your feeders. Have you ever noticed that one day no birds will be at your feeder, and then the next day birds are feeding like there's no tomorrow? Birds start their feeding frenzies when their internal clock is triggered by cooler weather and shorter days. To help birds the most in fall and in winter, feed them foods which have the highest energy per bite. Suet really gives birds an energy boost per bite.
For your other feeders, whether you're looking to attract chickadees or cardinals, woodpeckers or finches, Lyric Premium Wild Bird Food has the right choice of wild bird seed mixes. Birds do know the difference and now you do, too. Don't have a feeder yet? Let us help! All Bird Feeders now 25% Off
