How Many Steps Was That Again?
This past September, I was lucky enough to attend a conference in Asheville, NC to meet with many other independent garden center operators from across the country. This was a wonderful opportunity but to tell the truth, the main reason I went was the little side trip mentioned: a tour of The Biltmore Estate! This has been on my list of "TO DO" things for many years, so of course I said yes to the trip. As great as that tour was, however, our spur-of -the-moment side trip to Chimney Rock Park, NC took my breath away! I was assured by our company's president, Alfred Millard, that there is a elevator that would take us up to the flag. Sounds great, let's go!! Well, the elevator was closed and there were STEPS! Now I am not really the let's-go-take-a-hike type of girl, but there I was. Up we went. Some 400 plus steps and we were at the flag. But wait... Alfred pointed out still more steps up! Up, Up, Up we continued to climb. Breathtaking views made this climb so worth it. Larry Hurley, our perennial buyer, was so busy looking at the ground for native perennials, that he forgot to look out at the view. I guess we were all giddy for different reasons. If you're ever in the area, check it out.
Larry and I have posted a few photos of our trip on Flickr of the some wonderful plants and views we found while climbing all those steps! Enjoy! ~ Stephanie Fleming

Those Amazing Holland Bulbs! 25% OFF (sale good through November 6)
Sale Excludes Amaryllis and Paperwhites
It's time! It's time to get those bulbs planted. If you do not have them yet, stop by the nursery and choose among the many different bulbs we have from Holland. These choice bulbs are the perfect weekend "DIY" project for your family. Your kids or grandkids will enjoy the fun of digging in flower beds and getting dirty. Let them go wild and take photos while doing it. Then, next Spring, when those beautiful tulips, daffodils and other bulbs start appearing, head back out with the kids so they can see what they planted! Another project for you or the kids to do with Holland Bulbs from Behnke's is Layered Planting! Plant in Fall, Bloom in Spring. You can do this in your garden bed or in a container. If you decided on a big container, you pick your bulbs, add your potting soil part of the way up, place your bulbs on the soil, cover the bulbs with the remaining soil and THEN add some beautiful pansies or violas. Enjoy the happy faces of the pansies throughout the Fall and Winter! Then watch when the beautiful bulbs start popping up through your pansies.
