Exciting News At Behnke's
All of us at Behnke Nurseries are very excited to host the National Capital Orchid Society's 66th Annual Orchid Show at our Beltsville Garden Center. While we are all hoping that the furloughs come to a quick end, we were happy to be able to say "yes" to the NCOS when asked to serve as an alternate site to the National Arboretum. I hope everyone can find time this coming weekend to stop by and see this beautiful exhibition of blooming orchids. In addition to the display and talks, all of the orchid vendors will be at Behnke's as well. ~ Stephanie Fleming The Show is open to the public Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. For Details on the NCOS Show hours, lectures, vendors and so on, check out their web site. Note that seating for the lectures is limited.

The Other Spring-Flowering Bulbs
The so-called minor bulbs are a major source of color and spring beauty. These early risers will awaken your garden and announce the arrival of a new growing season.Good things come in small packages, it's true, and when it comes to bulbs, good can be defined as reliable, affordable and beautiful. Bulbous plants are found all over the world, particularly in areas where the long, dry summers encouraged the evolution of this unique design. A bulb preserves the life of the plant during adverse growing conditions while maximizing a brief period of favorable weather to store energy in a bulbous compressed stem. For the sake of simplicity, here we speak of bulbs to include those plants which store energy in underground organs. So in addition to true bulbs we include corms and rhizomes. (We had to say that just to satisfy those picky Botanists. As a gardener, it doesn't make much difference.) Behnke's has the largest selection of Holland Bulbs in the area!

People's Choice Chili Winners Second Year In A Row!
Beltsville Rotary 6th Annual Chili Cook Off Another Sucess!
Even though the weather was very hot last Saturday, the 6th annual Chili Cook-Off turned out to be one of the best ever! The Beltsville Rotary Club raised over $1,300.00 which is in turn used to support many different groups in Beltsville. One of these is The Prince George's County Police Department Explorer Post 600. For the second year in a row, these young people came out to cook chili and took home first place in the People's Choice category! We would like to give a special thank-you to Officer Hibbert (in the picture) and Officer Wilson who came out with these great kids to assist. We would also like to thank the Chili Cooks, many whom have attended all 6 of our cook offs. They love friendly competitions where the charity is always the winner!
