Behnke's, the Rotarians and Chili?
|
I grew up knowing all about the Beltsville Rotary Club. My grandfather Albert Behnke was a Rotarian and then my mother joined and is still an active member, as well as a former president of the Beltsville Rotary Club. I've been invited there each year to talk to the members about the Chili Cook-Off and I'm always impressed by how focused the members are on giving back to their community. Still, I know that many people in this area don't know what the Rotary Club is or what it does, so here's a short answer, starting with their motto " Service Above Self," which says it all in three simple words. Rotary International is a service organization that began more than 100 years ago, supporting local clubs and coordinating global programs, campaigns, and initiatives, one of which is the campaign to wipe out the disease polio for good. The Beltsville Rotary supports the Beltsville community in many ways, including direct support to many Beltsville organizations. This Saturday from 10 to 4 the Behnke's Beltsville store will once again be hosting the Beltsville Rotary Club's Chili Cook Off and it looks to be the best one yet! With many returning Chili cooks from the Mason- Dixon Chili Pod*, along with some local favorites, I'm sure everyone will find the perfect chili. Taste and cast your vote; all funds raised go to the Rotary. This year we have a special surprise: Old Line Fine Wine & Bistro is sponsoring a Craft Beer Tasting and will be donating the money raised back to the Beltsville Rotary Club! In our "Pick your Prize" Charity Raffle, you could win a private tour of the National Zoo, a foursome at the Cross Creek Golf Club, or two tickets and parking for a Redskins game. The Beltsville Rotary Club is also raffling off a 22" LED TV!!

We know that many of our customers have been furloughed, and we hope for a quick reconciliation of this standoff so you can all get back to work.

Introduction to Spring-Flowering Bulbs
|
Flowering bulbs are among the most reliable plants in the garden. Properly handled, they will reward the gardener with dazzling displays - often the first breath of spring. But first, a map of your yard is a Good Thing. Almost nothing is so irritating as forgetting where they are and seeing half of a good, large bulb coming up with your shovelful of soil. Unless you are planting for a good show this spring, I'd advise you to plant the bulbs more sparsely than the planting directions tell you - treat them right and they will fill in. They don't ask much - any bulb or vegetable food (low nitrogen, high phosphorus/potash) will do. I generally dig it in when I'm planting. Bone meal is good, too (if you are not planting around things that need an acid soil), as it releases nutrients for years, and so slowly that it cannot burn the plants. At Behnke's we pride ourselves that we have one of the largest bulb selections in the area. Add to that our knowledgeable staff and it's a win--win for everyone!

How to Mulch around Trees - and Why by Larry Hurley, Behnke's Perennial Buyer Why you might mulch around trees
Existing trees don't really need mulch, but there are three good reasons to mulch one anyway: - Aesthetics - it serves as sort of a frame around the base of the tree. It's tidy.
- Weed control - weeds are difficult to remove around the base of a tree unless you hand weed; this is impractical in a large landscape
- Protection - if there aren't any weeds or grass near the trunk, you won't whack it with the lawnmower, string weeder, and so on. This was, I believe, the original reason that commercial landscapers began mulching around trees. Especially on trees with thin bark (e.g., Japanese maples and beech) you can cause a lot of damage just by banging into it. This is sometimes called "lawnmower blight" in a rare flash of humor from plant pathologists

We have a large selection of pink kalanchoes, azaleas, begonias, gloxinias and dendrobium orchids. We are happy to help you select a plant or create a plant arrangement that is right for you or for a gift. ~ Sherri Deck, Behnke's Potomac Houseplant Buyer
