Flavorful wines, quite literally "wines full of flavor" are the mission at J. Lohr. Their unwavering focus on flavors sounds so simple, yet it's surprisingly complex. Achieving the best flavor demands total control, every step of the way, and is the result of planting each site to its ideal grape variety and applying artisanal winemaking techniques, including extended maceration, barrel and malolactic fermentation, among others.
Sardi's Catering of College Park will be providing a wonderful selection of meal choices. Sardi's has a popular restaurant in Beltsville along with a catering business in College Park. For our Gardeners' Night Out they will be selling a fruit & cheese plate, Chicken Caesar Salad, and their famous rotisserie charcoal- broiled chicken platter, featuring their marinated and slow-roasted chicken. Ever want to go to England? Join us tonight at 5pm for a Special Travel Presentation of our upcoming trip next May. Collette Vacations will be on hand with information about this terrific trip. Behnke's would like to invite you to experience the most unprecedented gardens from across the globe with Collette Vacations and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Together, Collette and RHS have put together this wonderful tour of The Beauty Of Britain. For more information call Bridget Peirson at Peirson Travel Service 410-788-8300.

Celebrate National Indoor Plant Week Sunday, September 15 through Saturday, September 21

Celebrate National Indoor Plant Week, September 15 -21
Watch for our upcoming specials in our houseplant greenhouses on our web-site and facebook page! Houseplants enhance your home and office environment. They add beauty, reduce indoor air pollutants and increase indoor oxygen levels. An indoor plant arrangement can be a focal point or a living backdrop.
Indoor plants are available for most lighting situations. Plants such as dracaenas, pothos, philodendrons, aglaonemas, spathiphyllums, ferns and ivies, to name a few, thrive in bright to low light settings. Others, such as cacti, bromeliads, crotons, and ficus will thrive in high light areas.

When
The best time to plant grass seed in our region is from August 20 to October 15, to give the grass time to get fully established before temperatures drop. Spring is the second best time to plant grass seed. Summer? Don't waste your money!
Preparing the Space
If you have a big weedy space it might make sense to rent a rototiller because everything must be removed, and if the soil's been neglected or compacted over the years, it would benefit from being dug up and turned over to a depth of 6 or so inches. The tilling aerates the soil (solving that compaction problem) and is a great opportunity to add some organic matter, which will make your lawn better for years. If you choose a self-propelled tiller, make sure it's the easier-to-control type with rotary blades in the back, not in the front. For really large spaces you can rent a commercial riding tiller.

 Sod Availability
- Sod is cut weekly and delivered for the weekend, weather permitting, so it's always a good idea to check with us in advance of your visit. Behnke's sells Durablend Tall Fescue sod, which is 90% Tall Fescue and 10% Kentucky Bluegrass. 10 sq. ft. strips.
(If you have a large lawn renovation planned and need 500 sq.ft. of sod (50 strips) or more, please order in advance (by Tuesday), pick-up only (by Friday), must pay in advance.)
