Get Ready for Summer Reading!
Howland Public Library eNews                       2016~v.20

Summer Reading Begins June 22nd!

We're gearing up for the Howland Public Library's Summer Reading Program "On Your Mark, Get Set...READ!" This summer's theme explores all kinds of topics from physical and mental fitness to the summer Olympics to being all that you can be. Children may attend the fun programs and events that we are planning for ages 3 to 12. The programs are free and open to young people of all abilities.
The benefits of summer reading programming for children:
  • Children are motivated to read.
  • Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.
  • Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.
  • Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
  • Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.
Find details for all of the programs and events by checking our online calendar at http://beaconlibrary.org or downloading our flyer here.

Portraits: Works on Paper
by Joe Radoccia

Reception June 11th 5-7pm

One year ago, local artist, Joe Radoccia, set aside his oil paints, canvas and colorful pallet and picked up an ebony pencil, earth toned acrylics, and a roll of paper. The goal of his experiment was to paint larger scale without losing the intimacy of his smaller works. To achieve this objective he chose to limit his options using as few materials as necessary and focusing on a single subject, the portrait. "I  wanted to create not just larger than life representational portraits, but faces that somehow would engage the viewer and hint at the essence of the personality portrayed," he says. A selection of works from this year of portrait painting will be on view at the library from June 11th - July 3rd.
