2016 Helen Savoit Awards

Congratulations Marcia Frahman, recipient of the 8th Annual Helen Savoit Library Advocacy Award. Marcia, a devoted friend of the library, has been volunteering her time to support the library for over 15 years. She served on the library's Board of Trustees for 10 years. In 2006, when Marcia was library board president, she approached artist Rick Price about creating the amazing mural that graces the facade of the library. As president of the Friends of the Howland Library, Marcia also manages Beacon Reads Bookstore. Beacon Reads is completely volunteer run and all proceeds from book sales benefit the library. Marcia feels very fortunate that she was able to meet Helen Savoit when she began volunteering at Beacon Reads. "She was such a lovely woman, a complete doll", Marcia remembers.

Shout Out for Justice!
Marcia will be honored alongside Justice McCray. Many of you know Justice as our amazing weekend tech-helper. We are pleased to announce that in recognition of all the wonderful work he does in the Beacon community, Justice will be the second recipient of the Helen Savoit Education Gift.

The Helen Savoit Award was established in memory of Mrs. Savoit. Helen Savoit taught in the Beacon City School District for over 25 years. A Town of Fishkill resident, Mrs. Savoit served on the Howland Public Library Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1995, and on the Mid-Hudson Library System Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1997.  As MHLS President, Mrs. Savoit represented all public libraries in the Mid-Hudson region. A life-long library user and advocate, Helen volunteered in Beacon Reads. She also ran a library book club -- renamed the Helen Savoit Book Club in her honor.
Helen's death in 2008 was a personal loss to the Howland Public Library. The Savoit family requested that donations in her memory be sent to HPL. Those donations established this award.

On Saturday, May 21st, the Helen Savoit Award dinner will be held at St. Rocco's from 5-8pm. If you would like to join us in honoring Marcia and Justice, please contact [email protected] or 845-831-1134 ex. 100. Full event details can be found here. If you cannot attend, but would like to support the Helen Savoit Fund, donations can be sent to Amy Raff, Director, Howland Public Library, 313 Main Street, Beacon, NY 12508.
