Join us as we continue our month long exploration of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and the history, art and culture of the 1930's.

Film Showing, "Gold Diggers of 1933"
Tuesday, Oct. 20th, 2:30-4:30

During the era of the Great Depression, films such as this one made the world go away, even if for a short time. This pre-code Warner Bros. musical stars Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, and more. See Ginger Rogers sing "We're in the Money" in one of the film's big musical numbers. 

Old Time Radio Shows
Tuesday, October 27th 2:30 - 4:30 pm

Gather around and listen to the radio shows that were played during the era of the Great Depression. Included will be the Green Hornet, Fibber McGee and Molly, and The Shadow. Period refreshments will be included.

The Dust Bowl, A POK Read Event
Wednesday,

Join Dr. John T. Reilly, History Professor at Mount Saint Mary College, as he presents a fascinating talk about the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression. The tremendous trials of the Dust Bowl are evident in "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. Light refreshments will be served.

Historic Photos on Loan from the FDR Library and Museum

On view in the Director's Gallery is the second installment of the traveling exhibit, "This Great Nation Will Endure". The  Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum reproduced sets of iconic FSA photographs from their collection for this Poughkeepsie Read event.   Part two, Work/ Unemployment, will be on display from Oct. 19th through 31st.     


Author Talk, "The Well Armored Child"

Join author and nationally-recognized child-safety expert, Joelle Casteix, as she presents a talk on her freshly released book "The Well-Armored Child: A Parent's Guide to Preventing Sexual Abuse." A "toolkit" book, it empowers parents with age-specific strategies to help make their children hard targets for sexual predators.
Medicare Workshop
Thursday October 27th at 6 pm

Join Jim Farnham as he teaches us how to navigate through the ins and outs of Medicare. Bring your questions! 

International Film Night

This month's film, My Old Lady, is a comedy from the UK. An American inherits an apartment in Paris that comes with an unexpected resident. Rated PG-13. 107 minutes.

All films shown in their original language with English subtitles (including films in English.) Doors open at 6:30 and film starts promptly at 7:00pm.

GROW Yoga!

Time for you and time for baby or toddler too! Develop a joyful mind, healthy body, and peaceful spirit together. Each class includes yoga postures and breathing techniques, with child focused segments to strengthen & tone abdominals, legs & tush while learning to relax overworked neck and shoulders. Songs and playtime for baby or toddler along with some gentle massage techniques round out the class.
