Have you met Justice?  Justice McCray is HPL's Teen Geek.  He's at the library on Sundays to help people with mobile devices: iphones, tablets, e-readers, etc.

If Justice has helped you, would you please take a minute to answer a few questions to help us show the value of this program?

Summer Reading Program

"Fizz Boom Read!"

Children of all abilities, ages 3-12, are encouraged to join the HPL 2014 Summer Reading Program, "Fizz Boom Read!". Libraries instill a love of reading in children and help them maintain their reading skills through the summer.  The fun begins July 8th. Children will read for enjoyment and keep reading logs at the library or online and log days that they've read or have been read to. Register online here or on the "Summer Reading" link on the HPL  website. Children can begin their logs now and may register up until August 1st.

All children who keep book logs will have their names sent to their schools for special recognition this September.

This summer, children's programs have been planned around the science theme. Science-Scene Thursdays for children grades K-6 begins on July 10th. Every Thursday at 1 PM, performers/educators will bring kids lots of science fun... from illusion and raptors to fire and ice! No registration.

For programs requiring registration, contact Ginny Figlia, Head of Youth Services, at 845-831-1134 x 103 or email youth@beaconlibrary.org.

HPL summer programs are made possible by the support of The Friends of the Howland Public Library and the Wee Play Community Project.

Let the Teen Battle (of the Books) Begin!

Howland Public Library Battle of the Books 2013

HPL's recruiting students entering grades 6-9 in September of 2014 to participate in the 10th annual Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books (BoB) is a nationally recognized literature contest in which contestants answer trivia questions based on books they've read during the summer.  BoB is designed to expose young people to good books, and build teamwork skills and good sportsmanship while enjoying friendly competition.

Students at HPL will participate in coaching activities and practice-Battles every Thursday from 5-7 PM between June 26th - August 28th (includes pizza). The library will supply the books and team t-shirts. On Saturday, September 6th, 24 teams will participate in the regional Battle of the Books at Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, NY.

HPL's Beacon Bees were the champions in 2010 and 2013. BoB is free to participants thanks to donations from the Friends of the Howland Public Library, The Allstate Foundation, and M & T Bank.  To register or for more information, contact Ginny Figlia, Head of Youth Services, at youth@beaconlibrary.org or 845-831-1134 x 103.

From the Director

Summer is HPL's busiest time of year. Take a quick look at our calendar to see why.

This year, it will be a little easier to ride a bike to the library, courtesy of two new bike racks from Atlas Industries in Newburgh. Thanks to the Friends of the Howland Public Library for purchasing the bike rack for Beacon Reads Book Store at 309 Main Street.  Special thanks to the City of Beacon Highway Department for installing the bike racks at no cost. Most appreciated!
