HPL cardholders can enjoy eBook and audiobook versions of the 2013 Big Library Read (BLR) selection, Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth by Jane O'Connor from September 16th - September 30th using Overdrive.

BLR is an international program that gives library cardholders unlimited simultaneous access to one book, creating a virtual global book club. The title automatically expires at the end of two weeks.

The BLR is possible thanks to Overdrive, the leading supplier of library eBooks, and to Harper Collins, publisher of the Fancy Nancy series.

HPL's Beacon Bees Win Regional
Battle of the Books Competition!

The Beacon Bees, representing the Howland Public Library serving the Beacon City School District, swarmed into first place on September 7, 2013 when they became the champions of the 9th annual Battle of the Books. After competing for five hours at Arlington High School, there were some tense moments as the last three teams "battled" it out.  Congratulations to Red Hook Public Library's Just Red team for taking second place and to Hyde Park Library's Page Turners for coming in third.

Twenty-two public libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System's five counties (Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, Ulster and Greene) competed in this nationally recognized literature contest in which young teens answer trivia questions based on books they all read this summer. Close to 200 students in grades 6-9 came together in friendly competition and over 100 family members cheered them on.  Individual library teams worked all summer with their librarians and coaches to prepare for this final regional battle.  Mini-battles were played throughout the summer to practice for the big event.  The teams all proved to be winners when it came to knowledge, team spirit, and good sportsmanship.

A big thank you to the host venue, Arlington High School, as well as: Blackwood and Brouwer Booksellers, who supplied multiple copies of the books to the libraries, Hannaford Supermarket, Stewart's Shops, all of the volunteers and families who came out to support the teams, and the coaches and librarians who worked so hard throughout the year to make this special event possible.  Much appreciate fiscal supporters include The Allstate Foundation through the Sorrentino Agency in the Town of Newburgh and donations from various library Friends Groups.  In October, Mid-Hudson Libraries will begin plans for the 10th Annual Battle of the Books!

It's National Library Card Month!

Photo of Derek Sanderson

On behalf of the Howland Public Library Board of Trustees, I would like to remind all Beacon City School District residents that September is National Library Card Month.  A library card offers you not only the Howland Public Library's rich resources, but you also gain access to the collections of the other 65 libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System.  Not to mention free music downloads, electronic books, and Mango language-learning software.  Our goal is to make sure that 50% of Beacon City School District residents own library cards by the end of September, and we need slightly less than 3,000 new card owners to reach that goal.  It bears mentioning that cards will also be available digitally for use on mobile devices, through a free app called CardStar.  (Look for Mid-Hudson Library System in the CardStar list.)  So please visit us online at beaconlibrary.org, or just stop by 313 Main St. for more information.

Sincerely,

Sanderson Signature

Friends Match Facade Grant Funds
Fanny Keaton Receives Check from Friends of HPL 2013

Outgoing Friends of HPL President Stacy Dedring presented HPL Director Fanny Keaton with a check for $10,575 toward the HPL Children's Room Facade Project.  Under Stacy's leadership, and with the help of many volunteers, the Friends have raised funds to benefit the library and BCSD community through an annual membership drive, the Fabulous February Fundraiser and July's Pirate Picnic, and through Beacon Reads Bookstore at 309 Main Street.

The HPL Board and Staff are most grateful for the support of the Friends of HPL.  Friends funds help HPL purchase new furniture and equipment, pay for special programs, and improve HPL's facility by matching grants.  Stacy has been a wonderful Friend's president and library supporter. We wish her only the best, and look forward to working with Friends old and new to continue to improve HPL programs, services, and facility.  Thanks to those who support the Friends of HPL and Beacon Reads!
