Hudson Valley Etching

"There is a River - A Mighty River"

A fascinating lecture on the social and economic contributions of Africans living along the Hudson River from the Dutch Period to the American Revolution, presented by Dr. A.J. Williams-Myers, Professor, Black Studies Department, SUNY New Paltz.

This presentation examines the contributions of African Americans in every aspect of Hudson Valley daily life, from Colonial times to the American Revolution. Professor Williams-Myers will trace the legacy of enslaved and free Africans to the overall economic growth of the Hudson Valley society, as well as their military participation in the nation's revolutionary struggle to win freedom from England - ironically, something denied them.

Tuesday, February 19th, from 6 - 7:30pm. Free. No registration required. Books available for sale and signing.

The election for the Howland Public Library Board of Trustees and library budget vote will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013.

U.S. citizens 18 years old or older and residents of the State of NY and the Beacon City School District for 30 days preceding the election are eligible to run for three (3) vacancies on the Howland Public Library Board of Trustees.

Candidates may pick up petitions at the library; these petitions must be notarized and returned to the library clerk by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, March 5th, and carry the signatures of at least 25 people qualified to vote in BCSD elections.

The Board of Trustees is the library's policy-making body.  A library trustee's commitment is to both the physical property and resources of the library, and to the services it provides and to the people who provide them.  The library board has the final responsibility to see that its library provides the best possible service to its community.  Public library trustees are not paid; they are community volunteers.

Meetings of the Board are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.  The public is invited to these meetings; the next one will take place on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in the community room at the library.
