Catholic-Lutheran Dialogue and Prayer Service
Pictured left to right: Dr. Michael Root, Bishop H. Julian Gordy,
Archbishop Thomas Rodi and Presiding Bishop Emeritus Mark Hanson

Sunday evening, January 22, 2017, was a hallmark day in the Catholic Archdiocese of Mobile, AL and the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  Jointly sponsored, Our Savior parish in Mobile hosted "From Conflict to Communion: 5 Ecumenical Imperatives." The guest speakers for this dialogue were Dr Michael Root
of the Catholic University of America and Presiding Bishop Emeritus Mark Hanson of the ELCA.  They spoke both separately and together, and fielded wonderful questions from an audience of about 130, including Catholics from Mobile and Lutherans from across the Gulf Coast.  Continue.
Disaster Response and Recovery

Pictured are some of the 22 youth and adults from Reformation,
Greenville, TN and St. Peter, Chapin, SC who served in the
Disaster Response Warehouse in Gatlinburg, TN

While in town for a retreat, 22 youth and adults served in the Disaster Response Warehouse. The warehouse is the place where survivors can go to get necessities for life; i.e, water, food, clothing, etc., provided by donations from across the synod and the nation.

Thank you, Pastor Jim Dumond and the youth and adults of Reformation Lutheran Church, Greeneville, TN.  Thanks also to the youth and adults from St. Peter Lutheran Church, Chapin, SC and the many individuals and families who assisted in the initial clean up efforts.

There are ongoing recovery efforts in Hattiesburg and Clarksdale, MS as well as in Gatlinburg with future plans for south Georgia. Please contact Ellen Koester LST.ellenk@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer.

As always in times of disaster, financial contributions continue to be greatly needed. Click here to donate.

Let's plan to bring hope and recovery to our neighbors across the synod.
ELCA presiding bishop addresses President Trump's
refugee executive order

CHICAGO (Jan. 30, 2017) - The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has issued a pastoral message addressing President Trump's executive order to restrict entry by refugees and visitors into the United States from seven predominately Muslim countries.
Eaton's message follows.

January 30, 2017
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Yesterday, we heard these words in the Gospel reading from Matthew 5:1-12, the beginning of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. In the Beatitudes, Jesus lays out a vision for life in God's realm, characterized by seeing those who are often most disregarded, including the meek, the mourning and the peacemaker, as bearers of God's blessing. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to hear this Gospel, including Jesus' call for his disciples to be carriers of God's light and hope and reconciliation to a world deeply in need of them. Continue.

What can you do today to stand with refugees?

Hi good folks - I am Pastor Patti Axel, Nativity Lutheran Church Bethlehem and I bring greetings from the Green Team of the Southeastern Synod.  This year is Care for Creation Year and we have many ideas and resources to share with you all year to help your congregations support the Earth, learn more about how we can go about doing that and read interesting articles that will motivate us to do more.

Last month we published the first 8 of our 95 Theses for Creation Care in an edition of the E-News.  We will continue to publish 8 more each month.  Members of The Green Team will also be meeting with Deans throughout the year so that they can disseminate vital information to pastors in each Conference/Deanery.  We want it to be as easy as possible to find resources, share information and care for the Earth around us.  Continue.
