Disaster response and recovery - what you can do now!
|
As immediate needs for post-hurricane disaster response in Georgia and other states continue to be identified and long-term recovery plans are being formulated, below are ways that congregations can plan to help now.
1. Assemble and donate flood buckets
Flood buckets can be dropped off at either Christ the King, Peachtree Corners, GA or St. Andrew, Franklin, TN. From there they will be transported to the Georgia coast or to other areas impacted by recent flooding. Click here to see what flood buckets should include.
For drop-off information at Christ the King, Peachtree Corners, GA contact Pr. Leland Armbright at pastorleland@ctklutheran.org or 770-449-1211.
Please contact Ellen Koester at LST.ellek@gmail.com or 615-838-5550 if you can deliver flood buckets to the Georgia coast or other areas as necessary.
2. Join the trip to Hattiesburg, MS to do flood recovery work
Scheduled for November 14-18, 2016, the retreat begins with supper at 6:00 pm Monday and concludes with breakfast Friday morning. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be work days. Work projects may include installing sheet rock or flooring and painting. In addition to remodeling work, there are also opportunities to assist with administrative tasks to help further the recovery effort: light projects around the volunteer house, or serving with partner agencies in their Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, and Thrift Store. There are many ways to be involved.
Cost is $120 per person which includes four nights lodging, four breakfasts, three lunches and three suppers. Participants are responsible for travel costs, food while traveling, and one supper out during the week.
Registration checks should be made payable to the Southeastern Synod of the ELCA with "Disaster Mission Trip" noted in the memo line and sent to the Synod office at 100 Edgewood Ave., NE, Suite 1600, Atlanta, GA, 30303. Registration can also be paid online here. Enter the amount in the "other payments" section and include "Disaster Mission Trip" as the reason for payment.
A volunteer form from R3SM (Recover, Rebuild, Restore Southeast Mississippi) must also be completed and returned to Ellen Koester or brought to the retreat.
3. Schedule a work trip today for your congregation or conference
If your congregation or members of your conference are interested in planning a trip to the Georgia coast or the Mississippi coast to help with long-term recovery work, contact Ellen Koester today. You can provide her with dates that your group is available or find out what trips are currently being planned. Ellen's contact information is available above.
Thank you for your support in assisting those whose lives have been impacted by natural disasters.
