The unsettled season of Advent
In incarnate Christ, God finds us and gives restless hearts rest
By Elizabeth A. Eaton, Presiding Bishop
O come, O come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, 257).
Advent. We were just here it seems. It's a season of
preparation and anticipation. It can become exhausting
and relentless. The commercial run-up to Christmas has certainly gotten longer. Sometime right after Labor Day the holiday displays appear in stores, ads pop up on our laptops and hand-held electronic devices, and carols creep into Muzak. And the annual holiday worship war between pastors and people will be waged over whether to sing Christmas carols in church during Advent. I will not weigh in on that epic debate in this column. Continue.

Stand for Welcome
Written by the Rev. Justin Ask, Southeastern Synod Advocacy Team
As we begin the season of Advent and wait the coming of Christ, it has been disappointing to see the House of Representatives pass the "American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act of 2015." This legislation adds further burdens to refugees who seek safety as they flee from violence and persecution. The current vetting process for refugees is vigorous and complete. There is no need to add further measures, which victimize some of the world's most vulnerable people.
As Lutherans, we have had a long history of showing hospitality and love to refugees. In recent years, Lutherans across the nation have welcomed more than half a million people fleeing violence and persecution from places like Syria. If you or your congregation have been involved with these efforts, you are likely aware that refugees are not a threat to our communities, but an asset.
In this Advent season, your help and action are needed. As we await the coming of Christ, we cannot wait silently. We need your help to ensure that the Senate rejects this and other unwelcoming legislation. We must raise our voices so that our elected officials know that we are opposed to closing off protection for refugees who are seeking safety in the United States. This is a season of hope, and sharing that hope with the vulnerable is part of our discipleship. After all, we follow a Lord who himself was a refugee in Egypt.
Thanks to the work of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, your advocacy on this important issue is simple. Follow this link to contact your Senators and Representatives in Washington to let them know that you support welcoming Syrians and other refugees.

Refugee Resettlement, Grace Lutheran Church, Oak Ridge, TN
Grace Lutheran Church, Oak Ridge, TN agreed in 1975 to settle a refugee family in Oak Ridge. The ad-hoc resettlement committee that was formed worked with the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services and accepted the responsibility for the resettlement of a ten-member Hmong family. In Laos, Hmong means "free people." The family, who arrived in late October of 1976, was comprised of Sy and Sia Moua and their six sons and two daughters. Another daughter was born in February 1977. Many members and friends of the congregation worked very hard to ensure the success of the resettlement. Richard and Mary Hoglund and their three sons were the shepherd family for the Mouas. Hardscape Plan for Lutheranch Being Developed
Two landscape architects are volunteering their time to develop a "hardscape" plan for Lutheranch that will include the roads, trails and site features. It is important that these features be in place prior to construction of the new retreat center. With the architect authorized to develop detailed plans and construction drawings for the center, Lutheranch is very fortunate to have two volunteers step forward to begin work on the plan. Stephen Schrader is from Birmingham, Alabama where he is a member of Shades Valley Lutheran Church. Jim Burtt is from Lawrenceville, Georgia. Continue.

Affirm 2016, to be held June 19-24, 2016 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, is a synodical youth leadership and discipleship event. We predict over 300 youth from across our synod will participate in grades 6 through 12. Youth are able to choose between 10 different age appropriate units that will build up their faith while developing skills they will
use in their daily lives, in their congregations and in their world. Each day is filled with activities including small groups, community time, meals, and worship.
If all this excites you, then please consider applying for Affirm 2016 Staff or if you know of someone who'd be good, please send the application to them. Applications, found at the link above, are due in the synod office by January 15 and you will be notified by February 15. We will need a staff of approximately 75. This includes pastors, parents, youth workers, and young adults to serve as small group leaders. We will also need medical experts to serve on the medical team. If you have any questions please email Rachel Alley at ralley@elca-ses.org or call 770-235-7339.
