ELCA celebrates 45 years of ordaining women
November 19, 2015
CHICAGO (ELCA) - On the 45th anniversary of the ordination of Lutheran women in the United States, "I give thanks for my sisters who were the first women pastors," said the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). "I give thanks for all women in ministry. We are doing what Mary, the mother of our Lord, and Mary Magdalene did before us - proclaiming the gospel." Southeastern Synod Bishop H. ELCA statement on U.S. response to refugee resettlement
November 19, 2015
We are shocked and dismayed by the terrorist attacks in Paris, Beirut, Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, but also in Nigeria, Kenya, Bangladesh
and the Philippines. Senseless acts of terror will maim and forever have an impact on innocent victims and their families. Our hearts and prayers go out to all whose lives have been shattered and are grieving the loss of loved ones. We know all too well the frightening memories of terrorist attacks in the U.S. and the uncertainties of possible future attacks. Continue reading Presiding Bishop Eaton's statement here. Southeastern Synod Bishop H. Julian Gordy expressed his concern about the U.S. response to refugee resettlement, triggered by the most recent terrorist attack in Paris, in letters written to the editors of news publications throughout our four state synod. Click here to read his letter as it appeared in The Tennessean. You can also read the most recent Lutheran Services of Georgia blog post addressing questions about the refugee resettlement process here in the United States here.

"African Christian Mothers and Fathers:
Why They Matter for the Church Today"
"African Christian Mothers and Fathers" is written by Dr. Mark Ellingsen, a Professor of Church History. He is on the faculty of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, the largest accredited historic black seminary in the U.S. In his most recent work, "Dr. Ellingsen traces the African roots of Christian theology, exploring the work and thought of women and men of ancient Africa who lived prior to as well as contemporary with Augustine. The much neglected contributions of Africans give an ancient context to the modern truism that "Black Lives Matter," and bring to light again centuries old, liberating wisdom that can help the church find faithful ways to live in current times still marred by racial divides."
