Powerful Words
What is Lutheran? Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton asks this question in her October column for The Lutheran. What we eat, what hymns we sing, what jokes we tell, what color we are ... none of this binds us together or makes us Lutheran, she says. Our theology must define us. And it's all about God's grace.
Reflections written by the Rev. Dr. Timothy Smith, bishop, North Carolina Synod - ELCA on September 29, 2015. Bishop Smith served as Senior Pastor of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Atlanta, GA before being elected in May and installed on September 12, 2015. Reflections is his response to the question "What are you and the North Carolina Synod going to do about the Muslim threat?" Our Bishop Gordy said, "this is a powerful testimony for hospitality and against fear-mongering."
Adult Vaccinations written by Connie Pearson, RN, MN, and Chair of the Southeastern Synod Health Ministries Task Force. Connie's article helps to raise our awareness of the need of being good stewards of our bodies by being properly immunized as adults.
All of the sermons and writings are reprinted with permission.

"God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, GA
The congregation of Holy Trinity, Athens celebrated "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday by preparing "goodie baskets" for the nurses at St. Mary's, a neighborhood hospital. Other activities included trash pick-up along the nearby streets; praying for the children and families at Alps Road School; and making baskets for their home bound members. Realizing the importance of everyone's involvement on this special Sunday, the children of Holy Cross (pictured above) wrote letters to United States veterans.

Golf Fore Hope Event
Supports Ministries to Those Living in Poverty
On the second day of Fall Break when the MyCanvas crew of LST arrived at their second ministry site for the day, one of the children approached a leader and said, "We waited so long for you to come."
Arts through the MyCanvas program is an important part of the lives of children living in poverty during school breaks. On Oct. 12, 38 wonderful golfers came together to raise over $2700 to support the work of MyCanvas and other programs of Lutheran Services in Tennessee.
A great big thank you to all who participated and helped support this event -
