Comfort, Comfort, My People
Written by the Rev. Stanley Combs, pastor, Trinity Lutheran Church, Hixson, Tennessee, this letter was sent to the members of his congregation following the shootings in Chattanooga.
As I write this we are only days away from the tragic shootings that took place in our community on Thursday, July 16th. Many have visited the makeshift memorials that have spontaneously sprung up at the recruitment center on Lee Highway and the U.S. Naval and Marine Center on Amnicola Highway. On Saturday, July 18th, we opened our church at around the hour the events unfolded on that horrific Thursday for those who would like to come to pray and reflect. Other churches have hosted prayer vigils and special services. The shock, the grief, the anger, the anxiety that this could happen in our community of Chattanooga lingers in our thoughts and our hearts. We wonder how this could happen? Even more to the point we wonder how God could allow this to happen? We wonder for what purpose this senseless act could possibly be justified or explained? The truth is that this side of heaven there are no answers that will bring us the satisfaction we seek and for which we yearn. Continue.

Trout Named NovusWay Director of Development
 NovusWay Ministries, the new name for the joint ministry of Lutheridge, Lutherock, Luther Springs and Lutheranch, recently announced that Danny Keith Trout assumed the Director of Development position effective August 3, 2015. Trout comes to NovusWay having enjoyed professional successes in leadership, management, faith-based non-profit operations and financial development. His responsibilities will be to lead the comprehensive development program and supervise deployed development associates. Continue.

5 a Day or Maybe More!
 One of my favorite things about summer is the availability of a large variety of fresh, in-season local farm grown fruits and vegetables. While I do not have a garden for several reasons, you will find me at the farmer's market early each Saturday morning during the summer. The market is a bustling place with fruits and veggies so fresh in appearance that you can be assured that they were picked within the past 24 hours. With all of the fruits and vegetables available in the summertime I have no trouble finding my favorites that I miss during the winter. Continue.

Funding Requests Now Being Accepted
Deadline: September 25
The Southeastern Synod's Budget and Finance Committee is now accepting requests for funding in the Synod's 2017-18 Ministry Funding Proposal, which will be presented for action at next year's synod assembly. Agencies, institutions and other groups are invited to submit their requests between now and the September 25th deadline, using the online request form available here.
Funding for committees and task forces is approved on a different cycle and requires a different form. Please use the online form located here to request support for a committee or task force during the next fiscal year (2016-17). The deadline for submitting committee/task force requests is September 25.
Note that links to the funding request forms are also included as one of the "Quick Links" on the synod website homepage - www.elca-ses.org.

 It's a Low Country Boil for Lutheran Campus Ministry Atlanta (LCM), and we need your support. LCM serves GA Tech, Georgia State, Emory and Agnes Scott. A Bereavement Seminar will be held at Camp Kinard near Batesburg-Leesville, SC, on October 2-4, 2015. The seminar offers support for men and women who have been widowed within the past three years.
