The Festival of the Reformation October 22, 2014

Throughout the Southeastern Synod, the Festival of the Reformation will be observed in a number of ways. Most congregations will celebrate with a worship service on Reformation Sunday, October 26. Following are a few community celebrations of interest. They are all open to the public.

Four Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations in the Chattanooga area will join together in a Service of the Word With Baptismal Affirmation in honor of Reformation Day, on Friday, October 31 at 7:00 pm. This unique and historic service will celebrate reconciliation and unity among Christian traditions. Resurrection is located at 4309 Ooltewah Ringold Road, Ooltewah, TN.

The guest preacher will be Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali, the Roman Catholic archbishop emeritus of Philadelphia. ELCA Southeastern Synod Bishop H. Julian Gordy will also participate in the service along with pastors of the local congregations. Representatives of our ecumenical partner churches have been invited as well. An offering will be received and is designated for the Catholic Health Initiative at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, where ELCA pastor, the Rev. Rev. Dr. Kathryn Love

The Rev. Dr. Kathryn Love is the distinguished preacher of the day for the 17th Reformation Service at The Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta (LTCA). LTCA is located on the campus of Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), 700 Martin Luther King Drive, Atlanta, GA 30314.
A former pastor of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Mobile, AL, Rev. Love has served the ELCA in numerous capacities, including churchwide Assistant Director for Evangelism & Director of Prayer and Renewal. The LTCA worship service begins at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, (previously advertised as Thursday, October 30) followed by a light lunch and discussion of the role of prayer in today's world.

Memphis Theological Seminary in Cordova

Rev. Cliff Bahlingher

The Rev. Cliff Bahlinger, pastor, St. Luke Lutheran Church, Cordova, TN is the guest preacher for the Reformation Day Service at Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS), located at 168 East Parkway South, Memphis, TN 38104. The service will be held in the chapel at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, followed by a luncheon at the seminary.

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary of Lenoir-Rhyne University will be
 hosting a week-long celebration of the Reformation between October 26-31. This year's events are part of a five-year recognition of the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. All of the festivities on this 497th anniversary will take place on the campus of the seminary at 4201 N. Main Street, Columbia, S.C.
Sunday, October 26
- 6 p.m., Christ Chapel - Reformation Hymn Festival featuring the Rev. Dr. Rusty Edwards, pastor, Christ Lutheran Church, Marietta, GA
Thursday, October 30
- 12 p.m., Refectory, Student Union -- Lunch lecture: "Preaching in Bronze," by Luther statue sculptor Chris Slatoff. Guests are invited to purchase lunch at the refectory or bring a brown bag.
Friday, October 31
- 10:30 a.m., in front of Voigt Classroom Building - Unveiling of a bronze statue of Martin Luther
- 11:15 a.m., Christ Chapel - Worship & Communion, with special guest preacher from Germany and Martin Luther descendant Christian Priesmeier
- 12:15 p.m., Reinartz Hall - Lunch and presentation featuring 16th-century publications from the Kessler Collection. In the spirit of the day, lunch is being catered by the Wurst Wagon. The cost is $10. Please bring cash to pay for lunch.
- 1:15 p.m., Christ Chapel -- Lute demonstration and recital by renowned guitarist and University of South Carolina faculty member Christopher Berg
