|
In elections held earlier today at the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) Triennial Convention, women from Region 9 captured two of the four officer positions for the 2014 - 2017 triennium. Southeastern Synod member, Ms. Patti Austin, was elected president. Ms. Austin, a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Lilburn, GA has served in a number of WELCA leadership positions including synodical vice-president and her current position as churchwide board representative.
Ms. Jody Smiley from the Virginia Synod (Region 9) was elected vice-president, marking three successive trienniums where both president and vice president are Southerners. Like Austin, Ms. Smiley also currently serves as a board representative.
Completing the executive position elections during the Trienniel Convention are Ms. Becky Shurson, Pacific Synod, and Ms. Ely Smith, Southwestern Washington Synod, who were elected as secretary and treasurer respectively. WELCA is holding their 9th Trienniel Convention and Gathering in Charlotte, NC this week.

Welcome to the Southeastern Synod
The Rev. James DuMond
The Rev. James DuMond was born in Miami, Florida. He and his wife, Alice, have two daughters, Jennifer and Christine. After working in the business world for 14 years, he answered a call to ministry and entered Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. He was ordained and installed as pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Gastonia, NC in August of 1998.
During Pastor Jim's years at Redeemer, he was an active member of the Gaston Clergy and Citizens Coalition and the church was involved in various outreach ministries including Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Cornerstone Christian Ministry, retirement home worship services and visitation, and the local Backpack Weekend food program.
As Pastor Jim begins his ministry with the people of Reformation Lutheran Church, he looks forward to serving with them in the ministries of the congregation and in the surrounding communities of Greeneville and Greene County. He plans to be involved in the local ministerial association, and to do everything that he can to support the schools, ministries that help to build stronger and healthier families, and ministries that provide assistance to those needing a helping hand.
As the pastor of Reformation Lutheran church, he will strive to encourage and equip the members of the congregation to use their gifts and resources to build up the body of Christ by helping people to hear the message of the gospel and experience God's love for them in Jesus Christ.
The service of installation for Pr. Jim was held on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Please welcome him at (423) 638-4627 or by email at theodicy21@aol.com.

Did You Know?
On occasion we receive requests in the synod office to update information about a congregation. In most instances it is due to a change in the website or email address. While it is correct and important to notify the synod office (so that we can have accurate information in our database), did you know that congregations can update/correct information provided on the ELCA congregation lookup webpage? This is the page someone sees when searching for a congregation on the ELCA website. To do so, follow the steps below:
1. Go to the Southeastern Synod website and select "Congregations" on the horizontal bar or select "Locate a Congregation" on the drop down menu.
2. Select the highlighted word "here".
3. Locate your congregation by scrolling down the list of churches on the right or by entering the city/zip code in the search field.
4. Select the name of the church to view the detailed information page.
5. Select "Congregation Information Update Form" and enter the requested information including an image if you wish.
Take a few moments and go to the website to see what a visitor sees when inquiring about your congregation. Should you have questions, please send an email to Carolyn Davis.

God's Work. Our Hands. Sunday.
September 7, 2014 is "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday. Visit the ELCA website to order personalized T-shirts, bulletin inserts, and other resources to help promote the day. Remember to take pictures of your congregation in action and share them with us at cdavis@elca-ses.org. |
We continue reading submissions from pastors who responded to the topic of what we should be doing now as we prepare for the fall stewardship programs in many of our congregations. This week's discussion addresses the question of who preaches the stewardship sermon on Consecration Sunday. Continue. |

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary
Academy of Faith and Leadership
2014-2015
Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary's Academy of Faith and Leadership is excited to announce its calendar of events for the 2014-2015 year! Visit our website (www.ltss.lr.edu/afl) and click on "programs & events" for a full list of currently scheduled events. Sign up for our email list here to stay informed as new events are added to the calendar. Our guest speakers this year include Rolf Jacboson, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Alan Storey, Mark Alan Powell, and many other regional & local favorites.
First up on the calendar is "Hard Sayings of Jesus," a four-session class taught by Rev. Dr. Charlie Sigel on Tuesday evenings in September (9, 16, 23, 30). Did Jesus really say "Hate your parents," "No divorce," "Cursed be that fig tree," and other hard to hear and understand words? If so, what could he have meant by such difficult words? This four-session class will explore that question and what those sayings have to tell us. Clergy and laity of all denominations are invited to participate in this learning opportunity. Click here for registration information.
