A Future Not Our Own

The following sermon was given at the Sunday worship service of the 2014 Southeastern Synod Assembly by our bishop, the Rev. H. Julian Gordy, and reprinted with permission.

1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11; John 17:1-11

"Don't be surprised about the fiery trials that have come among you to test you. These are not strange happenings" (Common English Bible). So says our lesson from First Peter. Given what we've heard about the future of the church, it could be a good word for us today. (Continue.)

Justin Eller. The book is widely distributed both online and in print. Share this story with your congregation! Global Church Sunday 2014

On World Communion Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, congregations are invited to celebrate our church's connection and common mission within Christ's global church by sponsoring a Global Church Sunday. Celebrate by taking a special offering for an ELCA missionary or global ministry, hosting a coffee hour with treats from around the world or including global songs in your worship service. A toolkit of these and other ideas for congregations will be released this August. For more information, contact globalchurch@elca.org. To learn about Global Church Sponsorship, visit the ELCA website here.
