Southeastern Synod Members Featured in
May Issue of The Lutheran

Deb Karch, Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, Lawrenceville, GA is pictured on the cover of the May issue of The Lutheran. This month's feature article, written by Karch, is called "Connecting to God's love: My journey through mental illness to faith." In it she chronicles her own experience with mental illness and how her reconnection with a community of faith played an important role in her spiritual and physical healing.  The Rev. Bob Mitchell, who serves as pastor at Christ the Lord, contributed an article on what congregations can do to be places of welcome and support for people with any type of illness. A study guide on mental health is also available in this issue and online here.

Karch is a senior epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA.  She also serves on the Southeastern Synod's Mental Health Initiatives and Suicide Prevention Task Force.

As of this writing, the May issue of The Lutheran is not yet posted online.  Check here soon to read more.  Visit here to read the ELCA's social messages on mental health and suicide prevention.

Is "Enthusiastic Lutheran" an Oxymoron?

Chuck Storla shares the value of the retreat experience.
I have to admit that it is somewhat intimidating to write something with the intent of putting it in the Southeastern Synod newsletter. Given the readership, this takes "preaching to the choir" to an entirely new level. So I will not even attempt to preach or teach, but just try to share some of my experiences in becoming an enthusiastic Lutheran.  Continue.
