"(I said) I'd give up chocolate for Lent"

Written by
Audrey Novak Riley,
associate program director for ELCA World Hunger, this article is published with permission from The Lutheran magazine.

"Whatcha gonna give up for Lent?" I remember classmates asking  one  another years ago. "Cartoons." "Gum." "Fightin' with my  little  brother."

I always said I was giving up chocolate for Lent. But I always  broke that promise - after all, Girl Scout cookies came around in  early spring too. Oh well.  Continue.

2014 Bishops' School at LTSS

Think of one or two exceptional high school youth in your congregation - the ones who ask the hard questions, stood out in confirmation classes, and exhibit a yearning to deepen faith and explore their relationship with God in more depth.  If you have a young person currently in the 11th or 12th grade, please nominate him or her for Bishops' School at LTSS in 2014.

The 2014 Bishops' School will be held the week of June 22-28 on the campus of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC.  Youth from all over the southeast will come together to study with seminary professors, worship in Christ Chapel and witness the way God is working in the world and in their own lives.  They'll also learn what it means to think theologically!

Attached is a brochure with additional information.  Please note, nominations are due by April 1st, 2014.  You are welcome to nominate more than one youth from your congregation.

Sleep!
Connie Pearson, Chairperson  Health Ministries Task Force

Note from the editor:  Regrettably, Ms. Pearson's article was not published earlier as planned.  Her advice, however, is still applicable to those of us who struggle to get a good night's rest.
Seventy million Americans (25% of the adult population) are chronically sleep deprived. Sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention and health promotion.  Sufficient sleep is not a luxury but a necessity that should be thought of as a vital sign for good health.  It is for this reason that March 3 - 9, 2014 is recognized as National Sleep Awareness Week.  Continue.
