From a cross, a dazzling light
The essence of Christ: Loving, selfless suffering and death for the life of the world.
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shown like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white (Matthew 17:1-2).
The Transfiguration is a strange story-the mountain, the light, the appearance of Moses and Elijah, the utterly confounded disciples, the voice of God. How do we make sense of this supernatural event? What does the Transfiguration of our Lord have to do with us? I confess that I couldn't figure it out. So, when serving in the parish, I scheduled Youth Sunday on Transfiguration Sunday, thereby successfully avoiding preaching about it for years. Continue.
A monthly message from the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This column originally appeared in the March issue of The Lutheran. and is reprinted with permission.

1 Corinthians 10-11; Matthew 13:31-35
Building Bridges - Growing Mission.
The ALDE website says that my job here is to "set the first span of our bridge to growing mission." To tell the truth, I don't know much about building bridges. I've only built one, and that was across a small bayou that ran through our back yard... Continue.

 | Connie Pearson, Chairperson Health Ministries Task Force |
Note from the editor: Regrettably, Ms. Pearson's article was not published earlier as planned. Her advise, however, is still applicable to those of us who struggle to get a good night's rest.
S eventy million Americans (25% of the adult population) are chronically sleep deprived. Sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention and health promotion. Sufficient sleep is not a luxury but a necessity that should be thought of as a vital sign for good health. It is for this reason that March 3 - 9, 2014 is recognized as National Sleep Awareness Week. Continue.
