One of the most powerful storms recorded, Super Typhoon Haiyan, struck the central Philippines on Friday, November 8. Approximately 9.5 million people have been impacted by the storm, and local officials estimate that up to 10,000 people have died in the Leyte Province city of Tacloban alone.
The ELCA provided $1 million towards relief efforts for survivors. One hundred percent of the funds are being disbursed through Lutheran Disaster Response to Lutheran World Relief to help those impacted. As individuals and congregations, we can continue to respond by offering our prayers and financial assistance. Click here to make a donation. Mark Allan Powell, author of Giving to God: The Bible's Good News About Living a Generous Life, is the Robert and Phyllis Leatherman, Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. With permission from Dr. Powell, his thought provoking insights into what stewardship means and how to embrace stewardship as a duty and delight will be offered in this newsletter over the next seven weeks.
"Imagine yourself at home playing along with two contestants on the TV game show 'Giving to God.' The rivals are vying for a chance to win the spiritual journey of a lifetime where they will forever be cheerful givers to God. The flashing applause sign has just been turned off as the show's host, I. M. Grateful, asks the opponents the following questions:
1) When you hear the word stewardship, money is the first thing which comes to mind. True or false?
2) Money and material possessions are prominent candidates for idolatry. True or false?
3) Stewardship is really a way of life when one gives oneself to God using all God has given in grateful and appropriate ways. True or false?
4) When one understands and practices Biblical stewardship, one will have a happier and better life. True or false?"
If you hesitated on any of your answers, stay-tuned to Dr. Powell's words of wisdom over the next few weeks.

Living Grace, Tucker, GA - Operation Christmas Child
The children and youth of Living Grace Lutheran Church (LGLC), Tucker, GA participated in the annual event, "Operation Christmas Child", an initiative of Samaritan's Purse. Through "Operation Christmas Child", boys and girls in countries all over the world experience the love of God in the form of a wrapped shoebox gift. The LGLC children filled each box with hygiene items, toys, books and school supplies as they learned about the future journey of the boxes. During the worship service their boxes were added to those previously prepared by the women of the church as the Rev. David Hardy, pastor, conducted a "blessing of the boxes." Subsequently, all worshippers were given an opportunity to participate by contributing to the cost of shipping a total of 50 boxes. |
